Umdat al-Salik wa Uddat al-Nasik (The Reliance of the Traveler and Tools of the Worshiper) is a classical manual of Islamic jurisprudence in the Shafi'i school, authored by the Egyptian jurist Ibn al-Naqib (702 or 706–769 AH / 1302 or 1306–1368 CE) .

Method and Scope

The work was composed as a concise compendium (mukhtasar) designed to present the standard and relied-upon positions of Shafi'i jurisprudence . In his introduction, Ibn al-Naqib states that he restricted the text to the sound rulings (al-sahih) determined by the principal late authorities of the school, al-Rafi'i and al-Nawawi, or either one of them .

In cases where al-Rafi'i and al-Nawawi differed in their rectifications of a given legal scenario, Ibn al-Naqib established a consistent editorial rule: he adopted al-Nawawi's rectification decisively in the primary text, while the contrasting ruling represented the position preferred by al-Rafi'i .

Structure

The treatise begins with the section on acts of ritual worship (qism al-ibadat), opening with the foundational requirements of purification (taharah) and proceeding through the standard subjects of practical Shafi'i jurisprudence .
