Umdat al-Hazim fi al-Zawaid ala Mukhtasar Abi al-Qasim (Arabic: عمدة الحازم في الزوائد على مختصر أبي القاسم, lit. 'The Resolute One's Mainstay Regarding the Additions to Abu al-Qasim's Abridgment'), also known as Kitab al-Hadi (كتاب الهادي, 'The Guide'), is a Hanbali legal text by Ibn Qudama (541–620 AH / 1146–1223 CE) . It gathers and condenses the supplementary legal rulings (zawa'id) found in al-Hidaya by Abu al-Khattab al-Kalwadhani that were not covered in the foundational Mukhtasar of Abu al-Qasim al-Khiraqi .

Title and Scope

The work is documented in Hanbali bibliographical literature under multiple alternative titles, including Kitab al-Hadi, Umdat al-Hazim fi Talkhis al-Masail al-Kharija an Mukhtasar Abi al-Qasim ('The Resolute One's Mainstay in Summarizing the Issues Beyond Abu al-Qasim's Abridgment'), and Mukhtasar al-Hidaya ('The Abridgment of al-Hidaya') .

In his introduction, Ibn Qudama states that he abridged the work according to the school of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, drawing most of its content from al-Kalwadhani's al-Hidaya by isolating the rulings added over al-Khiraqi's Mukhtasar, in order to facilitate and simplify study for novice students of law . Structurally, the book follows the chapter organization of Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi while incorporating the additional branches of jurisprudence derived from al-Hidaya .

Reception

The treatise gained widespread recognition and authority among Hanbali jurists . It was among the key sources utilized and cited by Ala al-Din al-Mardawi in his major reference work al-Insaf, where he noted examining an authoritative manuscript bearing the title Umdat al-Hazim fi Talkhis al-Masail al-Kharija an Mukhtasar Abi al-Qasim .

Manuscripts and Publication

A primary manuscript copy of the work is preserved in the Mahmudiyya Library in Medina (no. 1422 / 66 Hanbali Fiqh), consisting of 155 folios transcribed in 838 AH .

The text was printed undated in Beirut at Matabi Dar al-Ibad at the expense of Sheikh Ali ibn Abd Allah Al Thani, introduced by the scholar Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Mani . It was subsequently edited by Nur al-Din Talib and published by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Qatar in 1428 AH / 2007 CE under the joint title Kitab al-Hadi aw Umdat al-Hazim fi al-Zawaid ala Mukhtasar Abi al-Qasim .
