Umdat al-Ahkam min Kalam Khayr al-Anam (The Reliance of Rulings from the Words of the Best of Mankind) is a legal hadith collection compiled by the Hanbali scholar Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (541–600 AH / 1146–1203 CE), bringing together foundational legal traditions agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim .

Background and Purpose

Al-Maqdisi stated in his prologue that he compiled the text in response to requests from some of his peers to abridge a collection of legal hadiths ( ahadith al-ahkam ) limited strictly to traditions jointly transmitted in the Sahihayn of al-Bukhari and Muslim . The work is widely termed al-Umdat al-Sughra (The Minor Reliance) to distinguish it from his expanded compilation, Umdat al-Ahkam al-Kubra, which incorporates hadiths outside the strict criterion of the Sahihayn, including narrations from other collections .

Structure and Scope

The collection is arranged topically according to the standard order of jurisprudence (fiqh) manuals, commencing with the book of purification (Kitab al-Taharah) . It contains over 400 traditions—counted around 426 hadiths in various editions, or over 500 when including sub-narrations and variants that certain editors number separately . Although al-Maqdisi committed to compiling only agreed-upon (muttafaq alayh) reports, commentators noted a small number of instances where narrations included were transmitted solely by either al-Bukhari or Muslim .

Reception and Commentaries

The book gained broad acceptance across legal schools and became one of the standard primer texts memorized and studied by students of Islamic law and hadith . It attracted numerous commentaries, including:

  • Ihkam al-Ahkam Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam by Ibn Daqiq al-Id (d. 702 AH), on which Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-San'ani later wrote the supercommentary al-Uddah .
  • Al-I'lam bi Fawa'id Umdat al-Ahkam by Ibn al-Mulaqqin (d. 804 AH), an extensive multi-volume commentary .
  • Taysir al-Allam Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam by Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Bassam .

The text has been printed in various editions, including publications edited by Muhammad Hamid al-Fiqi, Ahmad Muhammad Shakir, and Mahmud al-Arna'ut .
