Turuq Hadith al-Nabi hayth kana fi al-Ha'it (Arabic: طرق حديث النبي حيث كان في الحائط, lit. 'The Transmission Paths of the Hadith of the Prophet When He Was in the Garden') is a specialized hadith monograph compiled by the Hanbali traditionist Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi (d. 643 AH / 1245 CE) . The work gathers the various transmission routes and related reports of the narrative in which the Prophet ﷺ sat inside an enclosed garden in Medina and gave glad tidings of Paradise to Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman .
Subject Matter and Scope
The title of the tract is recorded in manuscripts as Turuq Hadith al-Nabi (alayhi al-salam) hayth kana fi al-Ha'it wa-ma fi ma'nah (The Transmission Paths of the Hadith of the Prophet When He Was in the Garden and What is in Its Meaning) . Its primary subject is the well-known hadith concerning the Prophet's ﷺ entrance into a walled garden (ḥāʾiṭ) or orchard (ḥushsh) in Medina, accompanied by a companion guarding the gate . As Abu Bakr and Umar successively requested entry, the Prophet ﷺ instructed that they be admitted and given the glad tidings of Paradise . When Uthman requested entry, the Prophet ﷺ commanded that he be admitted and given the glad tidings of Paradise alongside a severe trial that would afflict him . The work also incorporates related reports sharing this theme, such as prophecies regarding the caliphate and reports announcing the entry of specific Companions into Paradise, including Ali ibn Abi Talib .
Structure and Method
Al-Diya al-Maqdisi arranged the tract by organizing the transmission paths according to the Companions who narrated the event . The text explicitly outlines narrations from ten Companions:
- Bilal ibn Rabah
- Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (Abdullah ibn Qays)
- Abdullah ibn Amr
- Abdullah ibn Umar
- Anas ibn Malik
- Abu Hurayra
- Zayd ibn Arqam
- Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
- Jabir ibn Abd Allah
- Abu Mas'ud Uqba ibn Amr
Al-Diya transmits each report through his own chains of audition, collected from teachers in cities such as Isfahan and Baghdad . Throughout the compilation, he offers critical commentary on textual differences (matn) and chains (isnād), comparing variants to the canonical collections of al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal . He also notes potential scribal confusions between similar chains, such as distinguishing the narrations of Abdullah ibn Amr from those attributed to Abdullah ibn Umar .
Manuscripts
An original manuscript of the treatise, penned in the handwriting of al-Diya al-Maqdisi himself, is preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus within the Umariyya collections (Majmu' 82, folios 191–197) . Copies and microfilms of the manuscript are also cataloged in other institutions, including the Central Library in Mecca and the Islamic University of Madinah .
