Turath Abi al-Hasan al-Harali al-Marrakushi fi al-Tafsir (The Exegetical Heritage of Abu al-Hasan al-Harali al-Marrakushi) is a collection of Quranic hermeneutical treatises and surviving exegesis excerpts by the Andalusian-Moroccan scholar Abu al-Hasan al-Harali (Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Hasan al-Tujibi, d. 638 AH / 1240–1241 CE) . The material was reconstructed, edited, and introduced by the scholar Muhammadi ibn Abd al-Salam al-Khiyati .

Source Material and Reconstruction

Al-Harali composed significant works on the methodology of Quranic interpretation, but much of his primary commentary was lost over time . The texts compiled in this work were preserved and extracted from the voluminous Quranic commentary Nazm al-Durar fi Tanasub al-Ayat wa-l-Suwar by the fifteenth-century scholar Burhan al-Din al-Biqa'i (d. 885 AH / 1480 CE), who cited al-Harali extensively throughout his analysis of the structural and semantic connections between Quranic verses and chapters .

Contents and Structure

The book is organized into four main components :

  1. Miftah al-Bab al-Muqfal li-Fahm al-Qur'an al-Munzal (The Key to the Locked Door for Understanding the Revealed Quran): A foundational methodological treatise in which al-Harali establishes overarching interpretive principles designed to serve Quranic reflection in a manner analogous to how legal theory (usul al-fiqh) serves the deduction of legal rulings .
  2. 'Urwat al-Miftah (The Handle of the Key): A supplementary treatise that builds upon the foundational principles set forth in Miftah al-Bab al-Muqfal .
  3. Al-Tawshiyah wa-l-Tawfiyah (The Embellishment and Fulfillment): A collection of chapters intended to complete and elaborate upon the discussions initiated in the Miftah and its 'Urwah, elucidating additional aspects of Quranic discourse and rhetorical modes .
  4. Surviving Commentary Excerpts: Textual fragments recovered from al-Harali's lost exegesis covering portions of Surat al-Baqarah and Surat Al 'Imran, focused on detailed semantic, lexical, and structural explanations .

Publication

The work was published in a single volume by the University Center for Scientific Research (al-Markaz al-Jami'i li-l-Bahth al-'Ilmi) in Rabat (first edition, 1418 AH / 1997 CE) . It includes a preface by Muhammad ibn Sharifa, a member of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco .
