Tuhfat al-Talib wa al-Jalis fi Kashf Shubah Dawud ibn Jarjis (The Gift of the Student and Companion in Exposing the Doubts of Dawud ibn Jarjis) is a theological polemical treatise written by the Najdi scholar Abd al-Latif Al al-Shaykh (d. 1293 AH / 1876 CE) to refute the doctrinal arguments and doubts raised by the Iraqi scholar Dawud ibn Sulayman ibn Jarjis .

Composition and Context

The treatise was authored in 1291 AH, approximately two years prior to the author's death, according to a note by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Mani' . It was composed amidst a broader scholarly dispute involving several prominent Salafi scholars of Najd and Iraq who wrote refutations against Dawud ibn Jarjis and his work Sulh al-Ikhwan (The Reconciliation of the Brethren) . In addition to this concise treatise, Abd al-Latif began a more extensive refutation entitled Minhaj al-Ta'sis wa al-Taqdis fi Kashf Shubhat Dawud ibn Jarjis, which he did not complete before his death and which was subsequently finished by Mahmud Shukri al-Alusi under the title Fath al-Mannan .

Content and Scope

The work is a concise treatise—spanning 156 pages in modern printed form—aimed at dismantling the creedal positions and theological doubts introduced by Dawud ibn Jarjis regarding the interpretation of the Quran and the Sunnah .

Printing and Editions

The treatise was initially published under the alternative title Dala'il al-Rusukh fi al-Radd 'ala al-Manfukh (Proofs of Firmness in Refuting the Puffed-Up), a title assigned to it by Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Mani' . That edition was published in 1382 AH (1962 CE) at the expense of Sheikh Ali ibn Abd Allah Al Thani, the former ruler of Qatar, printed by al-Madani Press in Cairo, Egypt, and was later photographically reprinted in 1402 AH by the General Presidency of the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Saudi Arabia .

The work was later verified and published under its original title, Tuhfat al-Talib wa al-Jalis fi Kashf Shubah Dawud ibn Jarjis, in an edition edited by Abd al-Salam ibn Barjis Al Abd al-Karim, completed in 1408 AH, with a second edition published by Dar al-Asimah in Riyadh in 1410 AH .
