Tuhfat al-Talib bi Marifat Ahadith Mukhtasar Ibn al-Hajib (The Student's Gift on Identifying the Hadiths of Mukhtasar Ibn al-Hajib) is a specialized hadith-extraction work (takhrij) by the Damascene scholar Ibn Kathir (d. 774 AH / 1373 CE) . It identifies, verifies, and evaluates the prophetic traditions cited as legal proofs in Ibn al-Hajib's (d. 646 AH) legal-theory treatise Mukhtasar al-Muntaha .

Background and Authorship

The legal-theory text by Ibn al-Hajib gained wide circulation among scholars and students, yet many of its cited narrations lacked explicit source references and assessments of authenticity . Ibn Kathir documented his composition of the work in his biographical chronicle al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah (The Beginning and the End), remarking under the entry for Ibn al-Hajib that he had compiled several fascicles examining the prophetic hadiths contained in the Mukhtasar . The book is also referred to as Takhrij Ahadith Mukhtasar Ibn al-Hajib . Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani recorded in Inba' al-Ghumr that he examined a manuscript copy of Ibn Kathir's takhrij, part of which was penned in the handwriting of Taqi al-Din Ibn Rafi .

Structure and Method

The work follows the thematic sequence and chapter divisions of Ibn al-Hajib's treatise on legal theory (usul al-fiqh), covering the following headings:

  • Linguistic principles (Mabadi al-Lughah)
  • Consensus (al-Ijma)
  • Commands and recommendations (al-Amr / al-Nadb)
  • The general and the specific (al-Amm wa-l-Khass)
  • Particularization (al-Takhsis)
  • Ambiguous expressions (al-Mujmal)
  • Clarification and the clarified (al-Bayan wa-l-Mubayyan)
  • Apparent and interpreted meanings (al-Zahir wa-l-Muawwal)
  • Implied meaning (al-Mafhum)
  • Abrogation (al-Naskh)
  • Analogy (al-Qiyas)
  • Objections (al-Itiradat)
  • Independent legal reasoning and proofs (al-Istidlal)

Ibn Kathir adopted a concise approach: he avoided unnecessary duplication of chains of transmission (isnads) and exhaustive variant wordings, citing instead the exact or nearest textual matches to Ibn al-Hajib's phrasing . When parallel narrations existed from other Companions, he pointed them out succinctly (e.g., stating that a comparable wording is transmitted from another Companion in a standard collection) without repeating the full narration . He also provided critical verdicts, explicitly stating when a cited narration was unrecognized or not known under the given phrasing .

Reception and Related Works

Ibn Kathir's treatise was one of the earliest dedicated hadith extractions on Ibn al-Hajib's Mukhtasar, preceded possibly only by remarks from Shams al-Din Ibn Abd al-Hadi (d. 744 AH) . Later hadith masters relied upon Ibn Kathir's evaluations, including Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi (d. 794 AH) in al-Mutabar fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Minhaj wa-l-Mukhtasar, Siraj al-Din Ibn al-Mulaqqin (d. 804 AH) in Ghayat Mamul al-Raghib fi Marifat Ahadith Ibn al-Hajib, and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in Muwafaqat al-Khabar al-Khabar fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Mukhtasar, where Ibn Hajar quoted Ibn Kathir extensively and cited his critical rulings .

Manuscripts and Editions

A manuscript copy of the work is preserved in the Feyzullah collection in Istanbul (MS 283) . The book was edited by Abd al-Ghani ibn Humayd al-Kubaysi and published in a single volume by Dar Hira in Mecca in 1406 AH (1986 CE), followed by a second edition issued by Dar Ibn Hazm in Beirut in 1416 AH .
