Tuhfat al-Majalis fi al-Taliqat ala Fihris al-Faharis (The Gift of Assemblies: Marginalia on Fihris al-Faharis) is a treatise of scholarly glosses and annotations on Muhammad Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani's biographical and bibliographical dictionary Fihris al-Faharis, written by the Hadith scholar and bibliographer Salih Ahmad Muhammad Idris al-Arkani (d. 1418 AH / 1997 CE).

Background and Composition

The book originated from al-Arkani's reading and study of al-Kattani's Fihris al-Faharis wa-al-Ithbat wa-Mu‘jam al-Ma‘ajim wa-al-Mashyakhat wa-al-Musalsalat, during which he inscribed marginal corrections, remarks, and elucidations directly onto the text. Upon examining these notes, his teacher and colleague, the Meccan traditionist Muhammad Yasin al-Fadani, praised the material and requested that al-Arkani collect and organize the annotations into a standalone treatise. Fulfilling al-Fadani's suggestion, al-Arkani compiled the work and assigned it the title Tuhfat al-Majalis fi al-Taliqat ala Fihris al-Faharis, aiming to assist scholars and students engaged in the disciplines of isnad transmission and Hadith bibliography.

Content and Transmission

The treatise focuses on clarifying names, bibliographic details, and chains of transmission recorded in al-Kattani's compendium. In the work, al-Arkani also records his own transmission paths for Fihris al-Faharis, noting that he received specific authorization (ijazah khassah) to transmit it from several direct students of al-Kattani, including Yahya ibn Muhammad Aman, Muhammad Amin al-Kutubi, Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Mashshat, Alawi ibn Abbas al-Maliki, Muhammad Ibrahim al-Khatani, Muhammad al-Hafiz al-Misri, and Muhammad Makki ibn Muhammad al-Kattani. He additionally notes possessing a general authorization (ijazah ‘ammah) originating from al-Kattani, as conveyed to him by al-Fadani.
