Tuhfat al-Abrar bi-Nukat al-Adhkar (The Gift of the Righteous on the Nuances of al-Adhkar) is a work of critical marginalia and hadith commentary by the Egyptian scholar al-Jalal al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE) on Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi’s (d. 676 AH / 1277 CE) renowned invocation compendium, Hilyat al-Abrar wa-Shiʿar al-Akhyar (better known as al-Adhkar) .
Background and Purpose
Al-Nawawi's al-Adhkar was widely received as a core reference on daily prayers, supplications, and remembrance formulas . Al-Suyuti engaged with al-Nawawi's text in multiple ways: he abridged al-Adhkar into a brief summary spanning two quires entitled Adhkar al-Adhkar, wrote a commentary on that summary, and compiled Tuhfat al-Abrar bi-Nukat al-Adhkar as a targeted collection of critical notes (nukat) on the source text .
Sources and Contents
The primary foundation of the work is the material from the hadith dictations (amali) of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani—specifically his work Nata'ij al-Afkar fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Adhkar . In Tuhfat al-Abrar, al-Suyuti extracted and compiled Ibn Hajar's key corrections, objections, transmitter identifications, and hadith gradings on the narrations recorded by al-Nawawi .
Beyond summarizing Ibn Hajar's findings, al-Suyuti supplemented the material with his own independent comments, corrections, and observations that do not appear in Nata'ij al-Afkar . The text also incorporates the complete treatise composed by Ibn Hajar regarding the hadith of Umm Rafiʿ on what is said when intending to stand for prayer .
Transmission and Publication
The work is documented in classical bibliographical reference works, including Haji Khalifa's Kashf al-Zunun and Ismail Pasha al-Baghdadi's Hadiyyat al-Arifin . Manuscript copies are held in institutions such as the Princeton University Library collection and the Central Library of King Saud University in Riyadh . In modern printings, the text of Tuhfat al-Abrar has been published in its entirety as marginalia and supplementary apparatus to edited editions of al-Nawawi's al-Adhkar .
