Tisa Majalis min Amali Tirad al-Zaynabi (Nine Dictation Sessions from the Amali of Tirad al-Zaynabi) is a collection of hadith dictation sessions delivered by the Abbasid syndic (Naqib al-Nuqaba) and hadith transmitter Abu al-Fawaris Tirad ibn Muhammad al-Zaynabi (398–491 AH / 1008–1098 CE) . The sessions were compiled and extracted from Tirad's source texts by the hadith scholar Abu Ali al-Bardani (d. 498 AH) .
Composition and Content
The work compiles nine distinct dictation assemblies (majalis) in which Tirad transmitted Prophetic traditions with his elevated chains of narration (isnad) . Only some sessions record specific dates: the first was held on 29 Jumada al-Ula (recorded as 482 AH or 472 AH), the sixth on 3 Rajab 473 AH, the seventh on 8 Sha'ban 473 AH, and the eighth on 7 Ramadan 473 AH, while the remaining sessions do not provide explicit dates .
The narrated traditions cover diverse subjects, including the status of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on the Day of Resurrection, his character, the merits of loving the four Rashidun caliphs, the virtues of Friday and the month of Rajab, the vision of God in Paradise, and acts of charity such as the story of Abu al-Dahdah . Individual narrations frequently include commentary comparing the height of the chain with the standard compilations of Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj .
Three of the nine sessions also survived in independent manuscripts: the first corresponds to the assembly known as Majlis al-Rawdah (with slight variations in ordering and commentary), the sixth was separately transmitted by Ahmad ibn Hibat Allah ibn al-Wathiq Billah, and the seventh was transmitted through the al-Tusi family .
Transmission and Manuscript
An early manuscript of the collection is preserved in the Umariyya collection (MS 35, fols. 76b–89a) . This copy was read to Tirad al-Zaynabi a few months prior to his death . It bears multiple transmission notes (sama), including:
- An entry in the hand of Abu al-Ma'ali Ahmad ibn Ali ibn al-Samin dated 548 AH, with a title-page audition from 540 AH .
- An extensive reading note written in 623 AH by al-Baha al-Maqdisi alongside Abu al-Qasim ibn Sasra, certifying transmission through Shuhdah al-Katibah, as well as Ibn Sasra's transmission from Tirad's sons (Ali and Muhammad), Abu Bakr al-Zaghuni, Umar al-Harbi, and Ibn al-Samin .
- Later auditions recorded for Abd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Qadir al-Jili in 601 AH, Ibn al-Munadi in 696 AH, and Ibn al-Mawazini .
The text was edited by Nabil Sa'd al-Din Jarrar and published within a collected volume titled Musannafat Tirad al-Zaynabi wa-Ajza Hadithiyyah Ukhra (Amman: Arowqa, 2019 / 1440 AH) .
