Thalathat Majalis min Amali Abi Said al-Naqqash (Three Sessions from the Dictations of Abu Said al-Naqqash) is a hadith tract dictated by the Isfahani hadith scholar Abu Said al-Naqqash (d. 414 AH / 1023 CE) .

Transmission and Composition

The three sessions (majalis) were dictated by Abu Said Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Amr al-Naqqash in Jumada al-Ula 412 AH . They were transmitted on his authority by Abu Talib Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qurashi al-Kandalani (d. 493 AH) . From al-Kandalani, the collection was transmitted by the hadith scholar Abu Tahir al-Silafi, who studied and read it with him in 491 AH and 492 AH from al-Kandalani's original certificate of audition . The transmission line from al-Silafi was preserved and documented by later biographers and bibliographers .

Content and Method

The work comprises three dictation gatherings preserving Prophetic hadiths transmitted with full chains of narration (isnad), along with scholarly dicta and ascetic anecdotes . Following several narrations, al-Naqqash includes critical evaluations of narrator uniqueness and singular transmission, frequently observing when a report is known through only a single transmitter from a specific authority .

In addition to legal and ethical traditions, the text records non-prophetic reports, including a legal statement transmitted from Malik ibn Anas, counsels on detachment and obscurity (khumul) attributed to early ascetics such as Abu Bakr al-Warraq and Abu al-Qasim al-Hakim, and lines of supplication poetry attributed to Yahya ibn Mu'adh al-Razi .

Manuscript Preservation

A manuscript copy of al-Kandalani's transmission of the work is preserved in the al-Umariyya manuscript collection at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (Majmu' 20, fols. 40–52) .
