Taysir al-Wadud bi Tarajim Rijal Muntaqa Ibn al-Jarud (Facilitating the Affectionate: Biographies of the Transmitters of Ibn al-Jarud's al-Muntaqa) is a specialized biographical hadith dictionary by the contemporary scholar Abu al-Tayyib Nayif ibn Salah ibn 'Ali al-Mansuri, focused on the transmitters of Ibn al-Jarud al-Naysaburi's hadith collection al-Muntaqa min al-Sunan al-Musnadah .
Context and Purpose
The work constitutes the fifth volume of the second series of al-Mansuri's overarching biographical project, Silsilat Taqrib Ruwat al-Sunnah bayna Yaday al-Ummah, within the subgroup titled Ithaf al-Bararah bi-Tarajim Man Laysa fi al-Tahdhib min Rijal Kutub Ithaf al-Maharah . Its primary objective is to provide comprehensive biographies for all narrators in Ibn al-Jarud's al-Muntaqa who were not profiled by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his biographical references Tahdhib al-Tahdhib or Taqrib al-Tahdhib .
Structure and Scope
The book is arranged as follows:
- Introductory Studies: Opens with a commendatory preface by the hadith scholar 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'd, followed by an extensive study of Ibn al-Jarud's life and scholarly legacy entitled Fath al-Wadud bi-Tarjamah Abi Muhammad Ibn al-Jarud . This study details Ibn al-Jarud's travels, teachers, students, books, and the transmission, manuscripts, editions, and features of al-Muntaqa .
- Biographical Dictionary: Profiles transmitters alphabetically . Al-Mansuri explicitly excluded the Prophet's Companions due to their recognized collective probity and Ibn Hajar's thorough coverage in al-Isabah fi Tamyiz al-Sahabah, as well as individuals mentioned only incidentally in the text who do not form part of the formal chains of transmission (isnad) .
- Indices: Concludes with four comprehensive indices covering the profiled narrators, geographical and tribal genealogical descriptors (nisbas), cited primary sources (both printed and manuscript), and subjects .
Method and Features
Al-Mansuri initially relied on the edition of al-Muntaqa prepared by 'Abd Allah Hashim Yamani al-Madani before adopting the edition of Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni as his primary reference for citations . Within each biographical entry, he:
- Employs specific abbreviations indicating which other canonical or major hadith works indexed in Ibn Hajar's Ithaf al-Maharah also transmit through the narrator, designating al-Muntaqa with the symbol (Ja) .
- Corrects orthographical corruptions (tashif and tahrif) in names, patronymics, and nisbas through manuscript collation, parallel transmission lines, and external biographical literature .
- Documents the teachers and students of each narrator, their places and dates of audition (sama'), dates of birth and death, and any recorded authored works .
- Compiles critical evaluations of impugnment and commendation (al-jarh wa-al-ta'dil) in chronological sequence, citing original sources and noting implicit authentications by scholars whose works conditioned rigorous narrator selection .
- Tallies the total number of traditions transmitted through each narrator in al-Muntaqa, verifying them against Ithaf al-Maharah, Zayn al-Din Ibn Qutlubugha's al-Muntaqa min al-Muntaqa, and Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni's Lu'lu' al-Asdaf .
Publication
The work was published in Riyadh by Dar al-'Asimah in 1436 AH (2015 CE) .
