Taysir al-Latif al-Mannan fi Khulasat Tafsir al-Quran (Facilitation from the Subtle and Gracious [Lord] in the Essence of Quranic Exegesis) is a thematic work of Quranic commentary by the Najdi Hanbali scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Sadi (1307–1376 AH / 1890–1956 CE), abridging his major exegesis to focus on selected verses covering core Quranic themes .

Composition and Purpose

Al-Sadi had completed his comprehensive commentary, Taysir al-Karim al-Rahman fi Tafsir Kalam al-Mannan, on 1 Rabi al-Awwal 1344 AH . Noting that the length of the earlier work could deter readers from completing it and impede its dissemination, he was advised by some counsellors to produce a concise abridgment containing its essential insights . He completed drafting the manuscript of Taysir al-Latif al-Mannan on 3 Shawwal 1368 AH at the age of sixty-one .

Method and Scope

Rather than providing a verse-by-verse commentary across the entire Quran, the work employs a thematic approach (tafsir mawdu'i) based on carefully selected verses . Al-Sadi opens with an introduction outlining comprehensive descriptions of the Quran, highlighting its qualities as guidance (huda), discernment (furqan), and clear exposition (tibyan) . The text brings together the principal subjects of the Quran and the Islamic religion, addressing creed ('aqidah), acts of worship ('ibadat), legal transactions (mu'amalat), character and ethics (akhlaq), Quranic narratives (qisas), and the prophetic biography (al-sirah al-nabawiyyah) .

Manuscript and Publication History

Al-Sadi completed his 168-page autograph manuscript in Shawwal 1368 AH and handed it to his student Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Bassam, who revised and transcribed a fair copy over four days . Al-Sadi approved al-Bassam's copy and sent it to Matba'at al-Imam in Egypt, where it was printed that same year under his supervision and distributed to students and scholars across Egypt, Riyadh, the Hijaz, and pilgrimage notables .

Biographical sources also record the title as Taysir al-Latif al-Mannan fi Khulasat Maqasid al-Quran in one volume . Later editions include printings by Maktabat al-Ma'arif in Riyadh in 1400 AH, the Salih ibn Salih Cultural Center in Unayzah in 1408 AH, and the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Da'wah, and Guidance in 1422 AH (consisting of 368 pages in one volume) and 1424 AH .
