Tawdih Maqasid al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya (Clarification of the Objectives of al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya) is a commentary by the Saudi theologian Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak on Ibn Taymiyya’s creedal treatise al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya.
Origin and Composition
The work originated as an oral commentary delivered by al-Barrak during an intensive summer educational program in the summer of 1414 AH (1993–1994 CE) at the Mosque of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya, located in the Sultana neighborhood of Riyadh. The audio recordings were initially transcribed by the mosque's administration and posted on its website, after which the text circulated widely across various online platforms. However, this initial digital transcript had not been read back to al-Barrak and contained numerous omissions and errors.
Editorial Preparation and Methodology
Abd al-Rahman ibn Salih al-Sudays proposed editing and preparing the commentary for formal publication, obtaining al-Barrak's written approval and authorization.
The editorial process involved several stages:
- Transcribing the recorded audio lessons and collating the written transcript against the audio recordings to eliminate discrepancies and omissions.
- Formatting and structuring the text for print.
- Reading the complete text back to al-Barrak, who made additions, deletions, corrections, and revisions.
- Establishing the base text of al-Aqida al-Wasitiyya by relying on two manuscript copies alongside the printed edition edited by Abd al-Rahman ibn Qasim in Majmu' al-Fatawa.
Publication History
The commentary has gone through several printings. A fourth edition was re-typeset, revised, and expanded with minor additions under the supervision of the Shaykh Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak Endowment Foundation in 1442 AH (2021 CE).
