Tawdih al-Mushtabah (Tawdih al-Mushtabah fi dabt asma' al-ruwat wa-ansabihim wa-alqabihim wa-kunahum, "Clarification of the Ambiguous Regarding the Exact Vocalization of Narrators' Names, Lineages, Titles, and Kunyas") is a biographical reference dictionary authored by the hadith scholar Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi (777–842 AH / 1375–1438 CE) . It serves as an exhaustive commentary, expansion, and rectification of al-Dhahabi's earlier onomastic treatise al-Mushtabah fi al-rijal: asma'ihim wa-ansabihim .
Background and Purpose
In 723 AH, al-Dhahabi composed al-Mushtabah as a concise reference manual for resolving homographs, ambiguous spellings, and easily misread names, lineages, patronymics, and titles in hadith transmission, drawing on the earlier works of Abd al-Ghani ibn Sa'id al-Azdi, Ibn Makula, Ibn Nuqtah, and Abu al-Ala al-Faradi . Al-Dhahabi relied primarily on pen notation—using diacritics and short vowel marks directly on the manuscript script—which made the text vulnerable to scribal error and textual corruption over time .
To overcome these deficiencies, Ibn Nasir al-Din wrote Tawdih al-Mushtabah to establish the exact vocalization of names by describing each letter and vowel verbally in words rather than relying on pen markings alone . He set out to clarify what al-Dhahabi had treated concisely, supply omitted information, expand abbreviated genealogical lines, and rectify factual errors found in the original .
Method and Structure
Ibn Nasir al-Din preserved al-Dhahabi's alphabetical organization and thematic chapter distribution without altering the placement of entries, even in cases where moving an entry would have improved the arrangement, so as to avoid disrupting the original work's composition . In the text, he systematically distinguished his own additions and commentary from al-Dhahabi's original passages by prefacing the latter with qala ("he said") and his own interventions with qultu ("I say") .
In addition to the main commentary, Ibn Nasir al-Din extracted a separate, abridged treatise focusing exclusively on the mistakes and misidentifications in al-Dhahabi's work, entitled al-I'lam bi-ma waqa'a fi Mushtabah al-Dhahabi min al-awham .
Scholarly Standing and Reception
Tawdih al-Mushtabah is regarded alongside Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Tabsir al-Muntabih bi-Tahrir al-Mushtabah as one of the two major fifteenth-century commentaries on al-Dhahabi's manual . Hadith scholars and editors have characterized Ibn Nasir al-Din's work as broader, more comprehensive, and more precise in orthographic recording and correction of al-Dhahabi than Ibn Hajar's work . The hadith scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Mu'allimi observed that Ibn Nasir al-Din was excessively modest in describing the scope and value of his commentary in his introduction .
Manuscripts and Publication
A complete three-volume manuscript of Tawdih al-Mushtabah is preserved at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus . Colophons on the first two volumes date their completion to Jumada al-Akhirah and Ramadan of 830 AH, respectively, in the hand of Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Mahmud ibn Badr al-Hanbali, who completed the copying following a collaborative scribal effort . Another partial manuscript is held in Sohag, Egypt .
The work was edited by Muhammad Na'im al-Arqasusi and published in ten volumes by Mu'assasat al-Risalah in 1993 CE (1414 AH) .
