Tathbit Dala'il al-Nubuwwa (The Confirmation of the Proofs of Prophethood) is a theological and polemical treatise by the Mu'tazilite scholar and chief judge al-Qadi Abd al-Jabbar (d. 415 AH / 1025 CE), dedicated to establishing the veracity of the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ through rational and scriptural proofs .
Background and Composition
The author had previously addressed the theory of prophecy in the fifteenth volume of his comprehensive theological work al-Mughni, which dealt with the general philosophical definition of prophecy, the nature of miracles, and distinguishing miracles from sorcery, trickery, or sleight of hand . Unlike al-Mughni, which he completed in 380 AH, Abd al-Jabbar composed Tathbit Dala'il al-Nubuwwa in 385 AH (995 CE) as an independent work focused specifically on defending the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ against deniers and rival religious traditions .
In early bibliographies, the work is cited under varying titles, including Dala'il al-Nubuwwa by Ibn al-Mulaqqin, Ibn al-Imad, and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, while Ibn Qadi Shuhba referenced it as Tathbit Dala'il al-Nubuwwa, and the title page of the primary manuscript gives it as Tathbit Dala'il Nubuwwat Sayyidina Muhammad .
Structure and Methodology
The work is characterized by a dialectical and argumentative style (uslub hijaji) aimed at refuting skeptics and external critics . Its methodology focuses heavily on the fulfillment of prophecies and reports concerning the unseen (al-ikhbar bi-l-ghuyub) contained in the Quran and the prophetic traditions, tracing how historical events confirmed them .
Abd al-Jabbar affirms the sensory miracles reported in the Quran and authentic Sunnah, rejecting the stance of early Mu'tazilites like Ibrahim al-Nazzam who denied sensory miracles . He identifies the Quran as an overarching proof on three distinct grounds: its supreme rhetorical eloquence (al-fasaha wa-l-balagha), its accurate foretelling of unseen future events, and its role in directing human intellect toward rational arguments .
Reception and Scholarly Assessment
Tathbit Dala'il al-Nubuwwa was widely recognized for its intellectual depth and persuasive rhetoric. Ibn Hajar and al-Dhahabi remarked that Abd al-Jabbar excelled and distinguished himself in this composition . Ibn Qadi Shuhba described it as one of his greatest and most distinguished books, displaying profound learning and insight . Modern scholars, including Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari, praised it for its unmatched dialectical power and formulation in dispelling doubts . However, traditional scholars also observed that alongside its strong argumentation, the book includes several weak and insubstantial hadith reports .
Manuscripts and Publication
The text was preserved in a unique manuscript housed in the Şehid Ali Pasha collection (MS 1575) in Istanbul, Turkey . It was critically edited and published in two volumes by Abd al-Karim Uthman in Beirut in 1386 AH / 1966 CE .
