Tasmiyat man akhrajahum al-Bukhari wa Muslim (The Naming of Those Included by al-Bukhari and Muslim) is a hadith biographical reference work by the traditionist and historian Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim (d. 405 AH / 1014 CE; also recorded as 404 AH) . The book compiles and classifies the transmitters who appear in the two primary canonical collections of Sunni hadith, Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim .
Scope and Subject Matter
In his introduction, al-Hakim defines the purpose and scope of the work as an abridged inventory of the narrators relied upon by Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari in al-Jami' al-Sahih and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj in al-Musnad al-Sahih . He classifies the transmitters under three distinct categories:
- Narrators agreed upon by both al-Bukhari and Muslim (ma ittafaqa 'alayh),
- Narrators included exclusively by al-Bukhari (ma infarada bi-ikhrajihi al-Bukhari),
- Narrators included exclusively by Muslim (ma infarada bi-ikhrajihi Muslim) .
In his al-Madkhal ila ma'rifat al-Iklil, al-Hakim noted that the combined sum of the narrators from whom al-Bukhari and Muslim transmitted, including their shared and exclusive narrators, does not reach two thousand men and women .
Structure and Method
The work arranges narrators alphabetically while maintaining a generational structure (tabaqat) :
- al-Hakim begins with the male Companions (Sahaba), giving precedence to the Ten Promised Paradise (al-'Ashara al-Mubashshara) before arranging the remainder alphabetically .
- He follows the male Companions with the female Companions (al-Sahabiyyat) .
- He then lists the Successors (Tabi'un), their followers (Atba' al-Tabi'in), and subsequent generations of male transmitters, followed by female Successors and those of later tiers .
- He includes a dedicated chapter titled Dhikr mashayikh li-Abi Abd Allah al-Bukhari (Mention of Shaykhs of al-Bukhari) .
Within individual alphabetical letters, al-Hakim occasionally arranges entries by tribal affiliation, prioritizes veterans of the Battle of Badr over others, and at times gives precedence to Qurayshis over the Ansar, though without adhering strictly to these secondary orderings throughout . Entries are intentionally brief, reflecting his stated aim of concise presentation .
Independence and Scholarly Identification
Scholars and bibliographers have discussed whether the text exists as an independent work or forms a section of another treatise by al-Hakim :
- Abu Hazim al-Abdawi recorded it under the title Ma infarada bi-ikhrajihi kull wahid min al-imamayyn .
- Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani cited it in Ta'jil al-manfa'a under the title Tasmiyat man akhrajahum al-Bukhari wa Muslim wa ma infarada bihi kull wahid minhuma .
- Ibrahim ibn Ali al-Kulayb, editor of al-Hakim's al-Madkhal ila ma'rifat al-sahih, concluded that the text corresponds identically to a section within al-Madkhal, suggesting that al-Abdawi may have seen this part before the entire work was bound together, or that al-Hakim composed it as a distinct piece before integrating it into al-Madkhal .
- al-Husayn Shawwat stated that it forms part of al-Hakim's al-Madkhal ila kitab al-Iklil rather than being a separate monograph .
Transmission and Publication
The work is preserved in manuscript form, including copies held at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (MS Hadith 388) . It has been edited by Kamal Yusuf al-Hut and published in Beirut by Mu'assasat al-Kutub al-Thaqafiyya (1407 AH / 1987 CE) .
