Tasmiyat ma warada bihi al-Khatib Dimashq min al-kutub - wa musannafatih (Listing of the Books Brought by al-Khatib to Damascus and His Compositions) is a short bibliographical tract compiled by Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Maliki (d. after 465 AH / 1072 CE) detailing the books transmitted by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi upon his arrival in Damascus, as well as a catalog of al-Khatib's own authored writings .

Scope and Structure

The work is arranged into two primary sections:

  • Transmitted Works Brought to Damascus: The first section lists the major transmitted texts (al-ajza' al-masmu'ah wa-l-kibar al-musannafah) that al-Khatib al-Baghdadi introduced to Damascus through his transmission, excluding incidental dictations and loose transmissions (siwa al-fawa'id wa-l-amali wa-l-manthur) . This section covers fundamental hadith compilations—such as Sahih al-Bukhari, the Sunan works of Abu Dawud, Abu Qurrah, Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah, and al-Daraqutni, and the Musnad collections of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, al-Shafi'i, Musaddad, and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi—as well as multiple transmission paths of the Muwatta' . It also records treatises on Quranic sciences and exegesis, historical and biographical compilations, military campaigns (maghazi), and a dedicated subsection listing numerous individual treatises by Ibn Abi al-Dunya .
  • Al-Khatib's Own Compositions: The second section enumerates the works authored by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi up to the year 453 AH . It lists sixty-four authored works (tasnif), recording the number of fascicles or parts (ajza') for many of them, including Tarikh Madinat al-Salam in 106 parts, al-Kifayah fi Ma'rifat 'Ilm al-Riwayah in 13 parts, al-Jami' li-Akhlaq al-Rawi wa-Adab al-Sami' in 15 parts, and al-Faqih wa-l-Mutafaqqih in 12 parts .

Publication History

The tract has been published in modern scholarship as an appendix to monographs studying al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's scholarly output and transmissions:

  • Edited and published by Yusuf al-'Ishsh within his study al-Khatib al-Baghdadi .
  • Edited and included by Mahmud al-Tahhan in his book al-Hafiz al-Khatib al-Baghdadi wa-atharuhu fi 'ulum al-hadith (published by Dar al-Qur'an al-Karim, Beirut, 1401 AH) .
