Tashihat wa-Taliqat ala Subul al-Salam lil-Amir al-Sanani (Corrections and Comments on Subul al-Salam by al-Amir al-Sanani) is a scholarly tract of critical marginalia and textual emendations by the Yemeni scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Muallimi al-Yamani (1313–1386 AH / 1896–1966 CE) on the legal hadith commentary Subul al-Salam by al-Amir al-Sanani (1099–1182 AH / 1688–1768 CE) . It was published as part of the twenty-third volume of the collected works project Athar al-Muallimi .
Manuscript and Scope
The original manuscript of the work is preserved in the library of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca (Maktabat al-Haram al-Makki) under shelf number 4686 within a collective codex (majmu), handwritten by al-Muallimi on one side of 14 folios . Although the manuscript itself did not explicitly state the title of the work being critiqued, textual evidence identified it as a commentary on al-Sanani's Subul al-Salam al-Muwassilah ila Bulugh al-Maram .
Al-Muallimi's notes cover only the introduction of Subul al-Salam and the first three chapters of the Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah): the chapter on waters (Bab al-Miyah), the chapter on vessels (Bab al-Aniyah), and the chapter on the removal and description of impurities (Bab Izalat al-Najasah wa-Bayanuha) . The specific printed edition that al-Muallimi read and annotated was not definitively identified by editors, though the final page referenced in his notes corresponds to page 55 of that print .
Contents and Methodology
Al-Muallimi organized his critical annotations into three distinct sections:
- Correction of Errors and Similar Flaws (Akhta tashih创始iyyah wa-nahwuha): Covering pages 1–2 of the manuscript, this section addresses typographical and editorial errors in the print edition he consulted . Al-Muallimi organized these notes into a four-column table listing the page number (safhah), line number (satr), error (khata), and correction (sawab), employing double slashes instead of repeating identical page numbers .
- Lapses of the Commentator (Awham lil-sharih): Spanning pages 3–6 of the manuscript, this section records al-Muallimi's corrections of mistakes made directly by al-Sanani concerning the vocalization (dabt), grammatical parsing (irab), or lexical interpretation (tafsir) of specific words and phrases .
- Substantive Comments (Taliqat): Spanning eight pages with an independent pagination sequence (pages 1–8), this section contains broader analytical remarks, substantive critiques, and responses to al-Sanani's legal and hadith views .
