Tartib al-Amali al-Khamisiyya li al-Shajari is a rearranged compilation of the hadith dictations (amālī) of the Zaydi scholar and imam Yahya ibn al-Husayn al-Shajari (412–499 AH / 1021–1105 CE), organized into topical order by the judge Muhyi al-Din al-Qurashi al-Abshami .

Background and Original Work

The core text derives from al-Amālī al-Khamīsiyya ("The Thursday Dictations"), delivered by Abu al-Husayn Yahya ibn al-Husayn ibn Isma'il ibn Zayd al-Hasani al-Shajari al-Jurjani al-Razi, known by the honorific al-Murshid bi-Llah . A prominent figure of the Zaydiyya active in Daylam, Gilan, and Rayy, al-Shajari reportedly traveled to four hundred towns and studied under four hundred teachers . While the majority of biographical notices place his death in 499 AH (1105 CE), other accounts record his death in Rayy in 479 AH or 477 AH .

The original dictations brought together hadith narrations, traditions, and reports transmitted by al-Shajari through his extensive chains of transmission from teachers across major scholarly centers, including Baghdad .

Arrangement and Structure

Because the original text was delivered over successive dictation sessions (majālis) without strict subject categorization, the judge Muhyi al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn 'Ali al-Qurashi al-'Abshami (d. 610 AH / 1213 CE; another report gives 623 AH) restructured (tartīb) the material . Al-'Abshami reorganized the disparate dictation sessions into a thematic layout to facilitate reference for students and scholars of hadith and jurisprudence .

Publication

The work was edited by Muhammad Hasan Muhammad Hasan Isma'il and published in Beirut by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyya in a first edition in 1422 AH / 2001 CE .
