Tarikh Darya (The History of Darya) is a fourth-century AH biographical work by the Syrian judge and scholar Abd al-Jabbar al-Khawlani (d. ca. 365–370 AH / 975–980 CE), dedicated to recording the notable figures, scholars, and lineages associated with the town of Darya near Damascus .
Authorship and Transmission
The book was composed by Abu Ali Abd al-Jabbar ibn Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahim al-Khawlani, also known as Ibn Muhanna al-Darani . The text was transmitted directly from the author through readings; a primary transmission took place in Muharram 365 AH when it was read to him in Darya by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Tawq al-Tabarani .
The work was subsequently transmitted across generations of Damascene traditionists. It was narrated from Ibn Tawq al-Tabarani by the hadith master Abu Muhammad Abd al-Aziz ibn Ahmad al-Kattani in Jumada I 458 AH, from whom it passed to Abu Muhammad Hibat Allah ibn Ahmad al-Akfani, and later to Ibn Asakir, who was read the text in Darya .
Scope and Contents
Tarikh Darya belongs to the early genre of local biographical histories (kutub al-tawarikh al-buldaniyya) . It documents the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, their Successors (Tabi'un), hadith transmitters, ascetics, Quran reciters, and notable local figures who settled in or hailed from Darya, historically one of the chief settlements of the Ghouta oasis and a primary stronghold of South Arabian (Yemeni) tribes such as Khawlan and Ans .
The concise work comprises 47 biographical entries arranged with full chains of transmission (isnad) for reported traditions and historical accounts . Among the figures profiled are:
- Companions and early figures associated with Darya, such as Abu Rashid al-Khawlani, Mu'awiyah ibn Tuway' al-Yazani, Salim ibn Abd Allah al-Muharibi, Abu Kabir al-Muharibi, and female figures including Hind al-Khawlaniyyah, wife of Bilal ibn Rabah .
- Celebrated ascetics and scholars, most notably Abu Sulayman al-Darani and his circle of local companions, such as Humayd ibn Hisham al-Ansi .
- Local community figures and scholars, such as the Quran reciter Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Dawud al-Muqri' .
A defining characteristic of the book is al-Khawlani's focus on local genealogical persistence; at the conclusion of most biographies, he traces the progeny and descendants of the subjects down to his own era in 365 AH . However, the author rarely recorded explicit dates of death, mentioning them for only seven of the forty-seven figures .
Scholarly Reception and Value
Tarikh Darya is regarded as an essential primary reference for regional Syrian historiography. Its principal merit lies in preserving unique traditions, local anecdotes, and biographical data unrecorded in larger compendiums such as Ibn Asakir's Tarikh Dimashq, even though Ibn Asakir drew extensively upon al-Khawlani's book for his entries on Damascene figures .
Publication History
The manuscript survived via a single copy plagued by errors and omissions introduced by a semi-literate copyist . The text was edited by Sa'id al-Afghani, who established the text, corrected names and lineages, added linguistic explanations, and supplied the missing dates of death for the biographed figures . It was published by the Arab Scientific Academy in Damascus in 1950 (152 pages) and later reissued by Dar al-Fikr in 1975 .
