Tarikh al-Zawawa (History of the Zawawa) is a historical and genealogical work by the Algerian scholar and reformer Abu Ya'la al-Zawawi (d. 1373 AH / 1952 CE), dedicated to the lineage, virtues, scholars, and social reform of the Zawawa tribes of Algeria .

Background and Composition

The book originated as a proposal drafted by Abu Ya'la al-Zawawi around 1912 while residing in Damascus, which he sent to Tahir al-Jaza'iri in Cairo . Tahir al-Jaza'iri commended the initiative, praising the reformist spirit of the project and noting the vast number of Zawawa scholars, while suggesting that he write a treatise on their language before embarking on their history . Abu Ya'la completed the composition of the book in Cairo around 1918 .

Abu Ya'la stated that he composed the work in response to requests from fellow Zawawa, both residents and emigrants, to clarify their ancestry and record their merits . His primary motivation was to counter French colonial policies and writers who claimed that the Zawawa and Berbers were of Roman or foreign descent, aiming instead to assert their Arab lineage and highlight their civilizational and religious contributions .

Structure and Contents

The work is organized into seven sequential chapters :

  1. The Science of History and Its Merit: An introduction addressing the utility of history as a source of moral lessons and pride .
  2. The Lineage of the Zawawa: The longest chapter, detailing their origins, arguing for their Arab ancestry, and defining their geographical boundaries along northern Algeria between the Gulf of Algiers, Bejaia, and Jijel .
  3. Their Virtues and Characteristics: An examination of their social qualities, such as bravery, generosity, protection of neighbors, high sense of honor, and devotion to Islamic law and the descendants of the Prophet ﷺ .
  4. Their Religious Lodges (Zawiyas), Scholars, and Service to Arabic: A survey of educational institutions and prominent scholars from the region who taught and served as judges across North Africa, Egypt, and the Levant .
  5. Some of Their Customs: An account of local social traditions and cultural practices .
  6. Requirements for Reforming Their Condition: Proposals for the social and moral rectification of the community .
  7. Educational Regulations and Curriculum: A proposed system and methodology for modern education and instruction .

Publication and Dedication

The author dedicated the book to Ahmad ibn 'Ali al-Sharif, whom he praised as an eminent nobleman of the region . Tarikh al-Zawawa was first published in 1340 AH (c. 1924 CE) in Damascus at the Fayha' Press on Midhat Pasha Street, spanning 104 small octavo pages . The publication was financed by 'Umar ibn al-Tayyib al-Zawawi, an Algerian Sufi expatriate living in Damascus . It was later republished in Algeria in 2005 by the Ministry of Culture, edited and annotated by Suhayl al-Khalidi .
