Tārīkh Ṭabaq al-Ḥalwā wa-Ṣiḥāf al-Mann wa-al-Salwā (Arabic: تاريخ طبق الحلوى وصحاف المن والسلوى, also titled Tārīkh al-Yaman Khilāl al-Qarn al-Ḥādī ‘Ashar) is an annalistic chronicle of eleventh-century AH Yemeni history written by the Yemeni jurist, poet, and historian ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Alī al-Wazīr al-Ḥasanī (1074–1147 AH / 1663–1735 CE; another report gives his death as 28 Ramadan 1144 AH at the age of seventy) .
Scope and Composition
The work is structured strictly by year, recording events and obituaries in Yemen spanning the period from 1046 AH to 1090 AH . The author organized the chronicle into two main parts:
- Part One: Covers the initial period of the chronicle up to the year 1080 AH. Al-Wazīr completed the writing of this first part on the night of 24 Shawwal 1115 AH .
- Part Two: Begins with the events of the year 1081 AH ("ودخلت سنة إحدى وثمانين وألف") and was concluded on 5 Muharram 1118 AH .
Content and Themes
Arranged around annual entries, the chronicle documents political developments, regional governors, tribal and administrative affairs across regions such as Dhofar and Hadramawt, military conflicts, and the rule of the Qasimid Imams of Yemen . Alongside political narrative, al-Wazīr incorporated obituaries of prominent religious figures, scholars, and imams of various schools who died in each year (such as the Shafi'i scholar Zayn al-‘Ābidīn ibn ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Ṭabarī in Mecca), and recorded contemporary poetry and epistolary exchanges .
Manuscript Heritage and Publication
The text survived in multiple manuscript collections across several countries:
- An autograph copy in two volumes dated 1115 AH in the private library of Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Zabārah in Sanaa .
- Copies at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin (MS 3619 and MS 4097, the latter dated 1119 AH) .
- A lifetime copy dated 1145 AH preserved in the al-‘Uqayliyyah Library in Jazan .
- Additional manuscripts at the Leiden University Academy Library (MS 946), Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library in Patna (MS 1100 / 2313), the Asafiyya Library in Hyderabad, and the British Museum (MS 8073, which preserves an incomplete portion spanning 1047–1080 AH that was once miscataloged as a history of Ottoman Iraq under Murad Bey) .
The chronicle was published under the title Tārīkh Ṭabaq al-Ḥalwā wa-Ṣiḥāf al-Mann wa-al-Salwā in Beirut in 1405 AH / 1985 CE .
