Tarajuat al-Albani (The Retractions of al-Albani) is a compilation documenting instances where the hadith scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani revised or retracted his earlier evaluations of prophetic narrations, shifting between authentication (tashih) and weakening (tad'if) across his published works .

Origin and Core Text

The compilation primarily draws upon the printed book Taraju' al-'Allamah al-Albani fima Nassa 'alayhi Tashihan wa-Tad'ifan (The Retractions of Scholar al-Albani in What He Explicitly Stated of Authentication and Weakening) by Abu al-Hasan Muhammad Hasan al-Shaykh, published by Dar al-Ma'arif in Riyadh . The material was abridged, rearranged, and expanded by Muhammad Bu 'Umar (also referred to as Muhammad Abu 'Umar al-Filastini), who modified its original ordering, corrected citations, and appended additional narrations (istidrakat) that he identified across al-Albani's oeuvre . When determining al-Albani's final stance on hadiths where explicit mention of retraction was absent, Bu 'Umar relied on the chronological sequence and publication dates of al-Albani's works .

Structure and Content

The core abridgment divides the tracked narrations into principal sections based on the nature of the methodological shift:

  • Hadiths that al-Albani initially weakened but later authenticated .
  • Hadiths that al-Albani initially authenticated but subsequently declared weak .
  • Supplementary additions and emendations by the compiler, covering further retractions and textual corrections .
  • An installment tracking narrations that al-Albani retracted weakening in the seventh volume of his Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahiha .

In each entry, the compiler cites the hadith text, the earlier evaluation and its reference, the later revised judgment with quoted passages from al-Albani's writings, and occasional analytical notes .

Critical Commentary and Related Literature

The compilation incorporates critical analysis of Abu al-Hasan's source work written by Muhammad Kamal al-Asyuti, author of al-I'lam bi-Akhir Ahkam al-Albani al-Imam . Al-Asyuti examined the 222 narrations collected in Abu al-Hasan's four-part book and highlighted multiple errors, such as misidentifying the chronological sequence of al-Albani's verdicts, misclassifying shifts between levels of weakness as retractions from authentication, or mistaking hadiths present in the two Sahihs for weakened reports .

The text also notes other works devoted to al-Albani's retractions, including al-Tanbihat al-Maliha by 'Abd al-Basit ibn Yusuf al-Gharib published in Dammam, and al-Nasiha by Abu 'Umar Hayy ibn Salim al-Hayy published in Kuwait in 1413 AH .
