Taqyid al-Muhmal wa Tamyiz al-Mushkil (Vocalizing the Unspecified and Disambiguating the Obscure) is a specialized hadith work by the Andalusian scholar Abu Ali al-Ghassani al-Jayyani (427–498 AH / 1035–1105 CE) dedicated to resolving orthographical ambiguities, vocalizing names, and clarifying narrator identities across Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim .

Subject and Methodology

The work provides a comprehensive guide to narrators cited in the two canonical collections whose names (asma'), patronymics (kuna), genealogical affiliations (ansab), or sobriquets (alqab) could be easily misread, confused, or conflated due to identical or unpointed Arabic ductus . Arranged alphabetically, it identifies shaykhs from whom al-Bukhari narrated without providing their tribes, homelands, or complete lineages . Al-Jayyani also addresses subtle errors, slips, and misattributions (awham) occurring in chains of transmission across diverse transmissions of the two books .

The book is arranged into two main parts—or ten fascicles in traditional partition . Its extensive introduction documents al-Jayyani's own transmission pathways (asanid) and transmission recensions (riwayat) of the Sahihayn, offering rigorous critical evaluations of their textual branches .

Reception and Influence

Taqyid al-Muhmal achieved broad recognition among hadith scholars. His contemporary Abu al-Hasan ibn Mughith commended it as a fine, beneficial compilation that scholars eagerly took from al-Jayyani . Transmitted directly by prominent students such as Abd al-Haqq ibn Atiyya, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Tahir al-Qaysi, and Abu Abd Allah ibn al-Hajj, it quickly became a primary reference in Islamic scholarship .

Al-Qadi Iyad praised the book's precision and thoroughness regarding narrator names, though he observed that al-Jayyani confined his scope to onomastic data without addressing textual obscurities or scribal corruptions in the hadith matns (mutun) . Consequently, al-Qadi Iyad modeled his own landmark reference work, Mashariq al-Anwar ala Sihah al-Athar, upon Taqyid al-Muhmal, summarizing al-Jayyani's material, rectifying certain omissions, and expanding the scope to include matn terminology as well as the narrators of the Muwatta Imam Malik . Later scholars—including Ibn QarquI in Matali al-Anwar, al-Nawawi, Ibn al-Mulaqqin, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in Fath al-Bari, Badr al-Din al-Ayni, and al-Qastallani—regularly cited and relied upon al-Jayyani's work for resolving difficult names and evaluating transmission paths .
