Taqrib Taqrib al-Tahdhib (تقريب تقريب التهذيب), also titled Taqrib al-Taqrib (تقريب التقريب), is a contemporary hadith biographical evaluation work by Abd al-Hakim Salih, written as a critical reassessment and commentary on Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's biographical dictionary Taqrib al-Tahdhib ("Approximation of the Refinement") .

Composition and Scope

The author completed the first edition of the work on 12 Dhu al-Hijjah 1444 AH . Following the first release, he examined al-Tirmidhi's al-Ilal al-Kabir ("The Major Book of Hadith Defects") and Abu Zur'ah al-Iraqi's Tuhfat al-Tahsil fi Dhikr Ruwat al-Marasil ("The Masterpiece of Attainment Concerning Transmitters of Mursal Hadiths"), which prompted further critical notes; the second edition was completed on 29 Jumada al-Akhirah 1446 AH (30 December 2024 CE) . Salih stated that he refrained from writing an independent preliminary introduction to Ibn Hajar's base text, deeming the introduction provided by Maher al-Fahl in Kashf al-Iham lima Tadammanahu Tahrir al-Taqrib min al-Awham ("Unveiling Misapprehensions Regarding Errors Contained in Tahrir al-Taqrib") sufficient .

Method and Structure

The book reproduces the full text of Taqrib al-Tahdhib using the edition edited by Muhammad Awwamah and published by Dar al-Rashid in Syria in 1406 AH . Under each narrator biography where Salih departs from Ibn Hajar's assessment, he inserts his own comments introduced by the word "Qultu" (I say, referring to Abd al-Hakim) . To highlight biographical additions, he employs recurring formulas such as "This was not mentioned by the author of al-Tahdhib" or "Transmitted also on his authority" when identifying transmitters or critical judgments omitted from Ibn Hajar's larger work, Tahdhib al-Tahdhib .

The critical interventions (ta'aqqubat) in the text primarily address several areas of transmitter criticism (al-Jarh wa-l-Ta'dil):

  • Companionship status: Establishing preponderance (tarjih) regarding figures whose status as Companions of the Prophet ﷺ is disputed, citing corroborating contextual indicators .
  • Supplying omitted evaluations: Incorporating accreditations (tawthiq) or disparagements (tad'if) not cited in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib—such as statements from Yahya ibn Ma'in via the transmission of Ibn Muhriz, or Ibn Hibban's Mashahir Ulama al-Amsar—to modify the standing of narrators classified as unknown (majhul) .
  • Lifting narrator anonymity (raf' al-jahala): Documenting additional reliable students transmitting from obscure narrators whose singular transmission had led to designations of obscurity .
  • Reconciling and preferring verdicts: Harmonizing conflicting evaluations where possible, or determining the weightier assessment according to established principles of biographical critique while drawing upon earlier authorities such as Abu Hatim al-Razi, Ibn Adi, al-Dhahabi, and Ibn Hajar .
  • Verifying citations: Checking statements attributed to early critics and explicitly noting when a cited statement (such as Ibn Ma'in's alleged declaration of a narrator as a liar) cannot be confirmed in surviving sources .
  • Re-evaluating early Successors (Tabi'un): Upgrading (tahsin) the status of narrators from the early generations of Successors (generations two through four, as well as five and six) who were recorded in Ibn Hibban's Kitab al-Thiqat ("Book of Trustworthy Narrators") and transmitted from by reliable authorities, supported by their presence in authoritative compilations such as the Sunan of Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i, Ahmad ibn Hanbal's al-Musnad, or authentications by scholars like al-Daraqutni .
