Taqrib Fatawa Ibn Taymiyya (Taqrīb Fatāwā Ibn Taymīyya, "Facilitating the Fatwas of Ibn Taymiyya") is a five-volume abridgment and editorial study by Ahmad bin Nasir al-Tayyar, designed to summarize, refine, and elucidate the voluminous legal verdicts and theological treatises of Ibn Taymiyya (661–728 AH / 1263–1328 CE) .
Background and Purpose
The primary corpus of Ibn Taymiyya's rulings and treatises was compiled in modern times by Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Qasim and his son Muhammad in the expansive multi-volume collection Majmu' al-Fatawa, alongside its later supplement, al-Mustadrak 'ala Majmu' al-Fatawa . Despite the work's centrality to Islamic jurisprudence and theology, its sheer size, extensive digressions, dense terminology, and scattered topics presented major hurdles for students of Islamic law .
Al-Tayyar undertook this work as an abridgment and refinement (ikhtisar wa-tahdhib) to make the material accessible without excessive length or omission of critical substance . His research drew upon more than forty volumes of source material, including Majmu' al-Fatawa, al-Mustadrak, al-Ikhtiyarat al-Fiqhiyya, and Mukhtasar al-Fatawa al-Misriyya by Badr al-Din al-Ba'li, in addition to writings by Ibn Taymiyya's direct disciples .
Methodology and Features
The author outlined eleven key editorial and scholarly tasks applied throughout the work:
- Abridgment of proofs: Restricting argumentation to Ibn Taymiyya's primary rational and textual proofs while omitting dispensable elaborations .
- Thematic consolidation: Gathering disparate discussions scattered across multiple fatwas into unified topical sections .
- Clarification: Explaining ambiguous phrasing and difficult terms .
- Hadith documentation: Providing source verification and grading (takhrij) for cited traditions .
- Contemporary annotation: Adding explanatory footnotes on noteworthy passages and linking them to contemporary contexts .
- Organization and structuring: Formatting the text into discrete paragraphs and adding descriptive subheadings for general issues and subtle points of benefit .
- Textual rectification: Identifying and correcting more than 500 typographical errors and manuscript misreadings (tashifat) found in earlier editions of Majmu' al-Fatawa and its supplement, listing them in a dedicated appendix at the end of the book .
- Comparative analysis: Documenting over twenty instances where summaries by al-Ba'li and other scholars diverged from what appears in Majmu' al-Fatawa .
- Tracking multiple positions: Identifying more than thirteen legal questions in which Ibn Taymiyya held two distinct opinions .
