Tanbih al-Qari (Alerting the Reader) is a hadith critical work by the Saudi scholar Abdullah al-Duwaysh (1373–1409 AH / 1954–1989 CE; another report gives his death as 1408 AH / 1988 CE) , dedicated to examining and reassessing the authentication and grading of narrations found across the works of Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani .
Composition and Structure
Al-Duwaysh authored the work after observing that many readers accepted al-Albani’s hadith judgments without independent investigation . The book was conceived in two complementary divisions:
- Tanbih al-Qari 'ala Taqwiyat ma Da''afahu al-Albani (Alerting the Reader to the Strengthening of What al-Albani Declared Weak), a title assigned by the author himself to the section addressing narrations that al-Albani graded as weak .
- Tanbih al-Qari li-Tad'if ma Qawwahu al-Albani (Alerting the Reader to the Weakening of What al-Albani Declared Strong), treating narrations that al-Albani authenticated or strengthened .
Al-Duwaysh died before completing either division and before assigning a title to the second part; the editor, Abdul Aziz ibn Ahmad al-Mushayqih, subsequently titled the second part to match the first . During his lifetime, al-Duwaysh sent a draft comprising around 92 hadiths to al-Albani while awaiting a reply, and forwarded a portion to Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, who praised the initiative .
Method and Contents
In the first part, al-Duwaysh systematically examines hadiths and reports that al-Albani classified as weak without subsequent reassessment, cases where al-Albani weakened a narration in one place but authenticated it elsewhere, and narrations where al-Albani stated that he could not locate them in canonical sources . For narrations declared weak, al-Duwaysh adduces corroborating transmission routes (shawahid and mutaba'at) or clarifies transmitter integrity to establish that the text reaches the level of sound (sahih) or fair (hasan), while identifying the classical collections in which unlocated reports actually appear .
In the second part, al-Duwaysh reviews narrations that al-Albani authenticated or judged good, highlighting underlying transmitter defects such as severance or omission in transmission (irsal)—for instance, demonstrating that Shurayh ibn Ubayd’s narrations from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari are mursal—or errors in reliance upon specific narrators . The work also addresses several miscellaneous hadith issues outside these primary categories .
Reception and Publication
The work is noted in biographical and bibliographical literature as one of the most useful hadith critiques directed at al-Albani's output, commended for the author’s broad knowledge, precise critical method, and respectful scholarly tone .
Al-Albani responded directly to various criticisms from Tanbih al-Qari in his later volumes of Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahiha (Series of Authentic Hadiths), Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Da'ifa (Series of Weak and Fabricated Hadiths), and his re-evaluation of Sunan Abi Dawud . In these discussions, al-Albani maintained his stance on certain chains while noting that in several instances he had independently reached the same strengthening in works published later, arguing that al-Duwaysh had simply followed corrections that al-Albani himself had already made in subsequent publications .
The book was published in Buraydah by Dar al-Ulyan in 1411 AH (1990 CE) in a single volume of 224 pages, featuring a foreword by Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz and supplementary annotations and editorial supervision by Abdul Aziz ibn Ahmad al-Mushayqih .
