Tanbih al-Khullan bi-Takmil Mawrid al-Zaman (Arabic: تنبيه الخلان على الإعلان بتكميل مورد الظمآن في رسم الباقي من قراءات الأئمة السبعة الأعيان, Tanbīh al-Khullān ʿalā al-Iʿlān bi-Takmīl Mawrid al-Ẓamʾān) is a treatise on Quranic orthography (rasm al-mushaf) written by the Tunisian scholar Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Marghini (d. 1349 AH / ca. 1930 CE) as a commentary on the didactic poem al-I'lan bi-Takmil Mawrid al-Zaman by Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad ibn Ashir (d. 1040 AH / 1631 CE). The work is traditionally appended as a supplement (dhayl) to al-Marghini's primary commentary on Quranic script, Dalil al-Hayran ala Mawrid al-Zaman.

Background and Purpose

The base didactic text, Mawrid al-Zaman fi Rasm Ahruf al-Qur'an by Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Kharraz (d. 718 AH), was dedicated to Quranic orthography solely according to the reading of Nafi'. Consequently, students studying other canonical readings were left without orthographical guidance unless they consulted works like al-Shatibi's Aqilat Atrab al-Qasa'id. To remedy this limitation, Ibn Ashir composed his versified supplement al-I'lan bi-Takmil Mawrid al-Zaman, documenting the variant spellings across regional codices (including the Medinan, Meccan, master Uthmanic, Kufan, Basran, and Syrian codices) relevant to the remaining seven canonical readings.

Ibn Ashir originally incorporated his own commentary on these verses into his broader work on al-Kharraz's poem, Fath al-Mannan al-Marwi bi-Mawrid al-Zaman, dividing the material across the four quarters of the Quran. Later, al-Marghini composed Tanbih al-Khullan to provide a systematic, standalone commentary on Ibn Ashir's verses, drawing upon Ibn Ashir's explanations while providing additional notes and clarifications so that readers could achieve comprehensive mastery of the orthographic rules for all seven readings.

Scope and Content

The text systematically analyzes the verses of Ibn Ashir's poem, detailing rules of Quranic orthography where other readings diverge from Nafi'. It specifically addresses differences among the early Uthmanic codices concerning letter elisions (hadhf), script variations, and word boundaries across the Quranic text.

Publication

The work was printed alongside Dalil al-Hayran ala Mawrid al-Zaman in Tunis at al-Matba'ah al-'Umumiyyah in Rabi' II 1326 AH (1908 CE), typeset by Muhammad al-Bahri and collated against the author's copy. It was later published in modern critical editions alongside Dalil al-Hayran, including an edition edited by Abd al-Salam Muhammad al-Bakkari published by Dar al-Hadith in Cairo (1426 AH / 2005 CE).
