Tamyiz al-Sidq min al-Mayn fi Muhawarat al-Rajulayn (Distinguishing Truth from Falsehood in the Dialogue of the Two Men) is a creedal polemical treatise by the Najdi Hanbali scholar Sulayman ibn Sahman (1266–1349 AH / 1850–1930 CE; another report gives his birth year as 1268 AH) addressing theological debates over the excommunication (takfir) of the Jahmiyyah, grave-cultists (al-quburiyyah), and contemporary Ibadis.

Background and Content

The treatise is structured as an epistolary rejoinder addressed to Abd Allah ibn Hasan ibn Husayn regarding a written answer sent by his brother Husayn ibn Hasan Al al-Shaykh. Ibn Sahman composed the work to defend the views of Muhammad ibn Hasan al-Marzuqi, arguing that Husayn had distorted Marzuqi's text and misrepresented a theological inquiry that had been presented to Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Latif Al al-Shaykh, Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Latif Al al-Shaykh, and Ibn Sahman.

The core dispute concerned the doctrinal status and prayer leadership of individuals who withheld takfir from the Jahmiyyah, tomb-worshipers, and contemporary Ibadis, or who claimed that Ahl al-Sunnah maintained two diverging opinions on declaring them non-Muslims on the pretext that religious proof had not been established against them. Ibn Sahman argues against offering excuses for these groups, maintaining that consensus exists regarding their excommunication.

Related Legal Rulings and Publication

The treatise is associated with legal verdicts regarding the excommunication of the Jahmiyyah and the invalidity of performing prayer behind anyone who refrains from declaring takfir upon them, authored jointly or concurrently by Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Latif Al al-Shaykh, Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Latif Al al-Shaykh, and Sulayman ibn Sahman. The text was edited and annotated by Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Zir Al Hamad and published as the second treatise within the sixth volume of al-Silsilah al-Salafiyyah li-l-Rasa'il wa-l-Kutub al-Najdiyyah.
