Tamam al-Minna fi al-Taliq ala Fiqh al-Sunna (The Completion of Favor in Commenting upon Fiqh al-Sunna) is a critical commentary and hadith-authentication work authored by the hadith scholar Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) on the contemporary jurisprudence manual Fiqh al-Sunna by Sayyid Sabiq .
Background and Purpose
When Sayyid Sabiq began publishing Fiqh al-Sunna, al-Albani initially praised its accessible prose, organized structure, and effort to encourage Muslims to derive legal rulings directly from the Quran and the Sunnah without blind partisan adherence to a specific madhhab . Al-Albani encouraged students and readers in Damascus and other Syrian regions to acquire the book .
As the work circulated, readers frequently approached al-Albani with inquiries about specific hadiths and legal rulings contained within it, leading him to point out numerous weak narrations and questionable legal conclusions . Despite initially hesitating when asked to publish his critiques, persistent requests from students prompted him to document his remarks in a dedicated treatise . Al-Albani emphasized that his purpose was not to diminish Sabiq's work, but to safeguard Fiqh al-Sunna from error and eliminate unauthentic reports .
Method and Structure
Al-Albani prefaced the book with an extensive scholarly introduction outlining fundamental hermeneutical and hadith principles to serve as reference points throughout the text, thereby avoiding repetitive explanations . Rather than following the conventional glossing technique of quoting only the initial words of a passage, al-Albani cited Sabiq's text in full or quoted its core argument, allowing readers without access to the original copy of Fiqh al-Sunna to understand the context and the critique directly .
The commentary focuses primarily on:
- Evaluating the authenticity of the hadiths cited in Fiqh al-Sunna, grading narrations as sound, weak, or rejected .
- Correcting source attributions, such as noting when narrations were incorrectly assigned or when sounder versions in classical collections differed in phrasing and legal implications .
- Re-examining jurisprudential deductions across various subjects, including purification, prayer times, funeral prayers, and fasting .
Publication History
The first edition of the work appeared during the early phase of al-Albani's scholarly career . Nearly twenty-five years later, after settling in Amman, Jordan, al-Albani prepared a revised and expanded second edition, finalized on 1 Rajab 1408 AH, incorporating further legal issues and critical corrections . The book has since been issued in a single volume, including a fifth edition published in Riyadh by Dar al-Rayah in 1421 AH comprising 473 pages .
