Talkhis Sifat Salat al-Nabi (Abridgment of the Prophet's Prayer Described) is a concise treatise on the ritual prayer by the hadith scholar Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE), distilling his larger work on the subject into an accessible guide grounded exclusively in authentic prophetic traditions .
Background and Composition
The work was composed at the suggestion of the publisher Zuhayr al-Shawish, proprietor of al-Maktab al-Islami, who proposed abridging al-Albani’s extensive study Sifat Salat al-Nabi min al-Takbir ila al-Taslim Ka'annaka Taraha (The Prophet's Prayer Described from the Takbir to the Taslim as if You Were Seeing It) to make its expression simpler for the general public . Al-Albani noted that this proposal aligned with requests he had received from friends and students over a long period . He completed the abridgment in Damascus on 26 Safar 1392 AH .
Structure and Methodology
The treatise outlines the complete prayer step by step, from facing the Kaaba and the opening takbir to the concluding taslim . Al-Albani organized the text under primary topics and descriptive subheadings, numbering each legal ruling sequentially . In compiling the summary, he introduced several supplementary benefits not present in the original work and provided brief linguistic glosses for expressions occurring in the transmitted hadiths and invocations .
Al-Albani structured the presentation according to the methodological approach of the traditionalist scholars of hadith (Ahl al-Hadith), explicitly refusing to restrict his rulings to any single school among the four Sunni legal madhhabs . He avoided analogical deductions (aqyisah) and speculative opinions (ara'), presenting every action with its direct foundation in the words or deeds of the Prophet ﷺ documented in the parent work .
Next to each action, the author indicated its legal status under specific categories:
- Pillar (rukn): An essential component integral to the prayer whose absence invalidates it, such as bowing (ruku'), alongside conditions (shurut) like ritual purity (wudu'), which are external prerequisites .
- Obligation (wajib or fard): An action commanded in the Quran or Sunnah without evidence establishing it as an integral pillar or condition; its performance is rewarded, and its omission incurs punishment unless excused .
- Recommended Practice (sunnah): Acts that the Prophet ﷺ observed consistently or predominantly without an imperative command of obligation; matters left without an explicit designation in the text fall under this category .
In the book's epilogue, al-Albani emphasized that conforming physically to the outward manner of the Prophet's prayer must be coupled with presence of heart and humility (khushu'), citing the verse: إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ ("Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing") .
Reception
The abridgment gained widespread circulation among students of Islamic knowledge and general readers seeking a direct, practical manual for daily worship . The hadith preacher Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni recounted acquiring a copy in Cairo around 1395 AH for five piastres when the unabridged volume was beyond his means, noting the impact of its text on his early study of hadith .
