Talkhis Kitab al-Mawdu'at (Abridgment of the Book of Fabricated Traditions) is a specialized hadith treatise authored by the Damascene hadith master and historian Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi (673–748 AH / 1274–1348 CE) . The work serves as an abridgment, critical review, and epitome of the expansive collection of fabricated reports compiled by Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 AH), titled Kitab al-Mawdu'at .

Content and Methodology

In Talkhis Kitab al-Mawdu'at, al-Dhahabi summarizes Ibn al-Jawzi’s original text by condensing the chains of transmission (isnads) and focusing on the underlying defects ('ilal) of the cited narrations . The work examines the impugned narrators responsible for fabricated or severely defective reports, providing concise evaluations of their reliability and clarifying the specific transmitters through whom the weakness entered the transmission line .

While summarizing Ibn al-Jawzi’s material, al-Dhahabi exercises independent critical judgment on the individual reports, distinguishing between outright fabrications (mawdu' or batil) and narrations that suffered from severe obscurity or defective transmission without necessarily meeting the strict threshold of forgery .

Scholarly Reception and Editions

The treatise served as a reference for subsequent hadith scholars who compiled comprehensive works on fabricated traditions . Notably, Ibn 'Arraq al-Kinani (d. 963 AH) drew directly upon al-Dhahabi's Talkhis when preparing his compendium Tanzih al-Shari'ah al-Marfu'ah 'an al-Akhbar al-Shani'ah al-Mawdu'ah, utilizing it alongside Ibn al-Jawzi’s original compilation and al-Dhahabi’s other critical works .

The book was edited and published by Yasir ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad and issued by Maktabat al-Rushd in Riyadh (first edition, 1419 AH) .
