Taʿlīqāt al-Shaykh al-Barrāk ʿalā al-Mukhālafāt al-ʿAqdīyyah fī Fatḥ al-Bārī (Shaykh al-Barrak's Comments on Theological Contradictions in Fatḥ al-Bārī) is a specialized creedal work containing dictated glosses and critical notes by the contemporary Saudi scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Barrak on selected doctrinal passages in Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's monumental commentary Fath al-Bari .

Background and Methodology

The work was not composed as a comprehensive, cover-to-cover commentary on Fatḥ al-Bārī . Instead, Shaykh Abd al-Aziz al-Jalil surveyed Fatḥ al-Bārī, extracted passages where Ibn Hajar's theological formulations diverged from the creed of the early Muslims (Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah), and presented these excerpts to al-Barrak . Al-Barrak then dictated his comments on those specific points to clarify the Athari/Salafi stance, addressing more than 150 doctrinal questions .

The commentary primarily critiques Ash'arite interpretations found in Fatḥ al-Bārī, particularly regarding figurative reinterpretation (taʾwīl) and the consignment of textual meanings (tafwīḍ) concerning divine attributes, such as God's ascending above the Throne (istiwāʾ) and other affirmed attributes .

Publication History

The glosses were initially printed alongside the text of Fatḥ al-Bārī in an edition prepared by Nazar al-Faryabi and published by Dar Taybah in 1426 AH, supplementing the earlier marginal notes of Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz .

In Dhu al-Qiʿdah 1426 AH, Abd al-Rahman ibn Salih al-Sudays prepared a standalone edition of the glosses with the author's approval, assigning a sequential number to each comment and cross-referencing Ibn Hajar's text by volume and page to the first Salafiyyah edition of Fatḥ al-Bārī . A standalone print edition was also published by Dar al-Tawhid in 1433 AH (2012 CE), overseen by Abd al-Muhsin ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Askar .
