Qurrat Uyun al-Akhyar Takmilat Radd al-Muhtar (Arabic: قرة عيون الأخيار لتكملة رد المحتار; "Delight of the Eyes of the Virtuous in Completing Radd al-Muhtar"), commonly known as Takmilat Hashiyat Ibn Abidin, is a late Ottoman-era work of Hanafi jurisprudence by the Damascene jurist Muhammad Ala al-Din ibn Abidin (1244–1306 AH / 1828–1889 CE) . It serves as the official continuation and completion of his father Muhammad Amin ibn Abidin's (d. 1252 AH) celebrated supercommentary, Radd al-Muhtar ala al-Durr al-Mukhtar .

Background and Composition

The author's father, Muhammad Amin ibn Abidin, composed an initial rough draft (taswid) of his entire supercommentary on al-Haskafi's al-Durr al-Mukhtar, but he died in 1252 AH before producing a complete fair copy (tabyid) . The elder Ibn Abidin had prepared the fair copy starting first from the chapter of hire (Kitab al-Ijarah) to the end of the text, and subsequently from the beginning of the book up through the middle of the miscellaneous judicial rulings section (shatta al-qada'), leaving behind scattered marginal notes and annotations on the remaining portions . His son initially compiled those unedited marginal notes without alteration and sent them to Bulaq in Egypt to be printed alongside the main work .

In 1285 AH, Muhammad Ala al-Din traveled to Istanbul, where he served for three years on the scholarly commission tasked with drafting the Ottoman civil code (Majallat al-Ahkam al-Adliyyah) under the presidency of Minister Ahmad Jawdat Pasha . After resigning from the commission and returning to Damascus, he authored Qurrat Uyun al-Akhyar as a full, independent continuation to complete the missing sections of his father's supercommentary, finishing its composition in 1290 AH .

Content and Method

The work provides a detailed gloss on the legal chapters of al-Durr al-Mukhtar that were left incomplete in the fair draft of Radd al-Muhtar, covering substantive branches of Hanafi law (furu') including litigation (da'wa), judicial procedure (qada'), oaths, and related contractual and procedural topics . Following his father's method, the author comments directly on al-Haskafi's text, resolving ambiguous legal cases, verifying transmissions across classical Hanafi treatises—such as al-Bahr al-Ra'iq and Jami al-Fusulayn—and discussing legal fatwas and judicial practice .

Reception and Editions

The text was scrutinized by later Hanafi scholars; notably, the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Abd al-Qadir al-Rafi'i (d. 1323 AH), compiled a dedicated table of critical errata and emendations on the work titled Jadwal al-Aghlat al-Waqi'ah fi Kitab Qurrat Uyun al-Akhyar Takmilat Radd al-Muhtar ala al-Durr al-Mukhtar .

Qurrat Uyun al-Akhyar was published as a two-volume supplement in early printings at Bulaq (1299 AH and 1326 AH) and by al-Matba'ah al-Maymaniyyah . It has subsequently been issued alongside editions of Radd al-Muhtar, including a multi-volume edition published by Dar al-Fikr in Beirut (1415 AH / 1995 CE) supervised by its Research and Studies Office, an edition published by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah (edited by Adil Ahmad Abd al-Mawjud and Ali Muhammad Mu'awwad, 2003), and a Riyadh edition published by Dar Alam al-Kutub (2003) alongside al-Rafi'i's glosses .
