Takhrij Ahadith Shawahid al-Tawdih wa Mulahazat ala Tabat Fuad Abd al-Baqi (The Extraction of the Hadiths of Shawahid al-Tawdih and Notes on the Edition of Fuad Abd al-Baqi) is a scholarly treatise by the Yemeni hadith scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Muallimi al-Yamani (d. 1386 AH / 1966 CE) dedicated to sourcing the prophetic traditions cited in Ibn Malik's grammatical commentary Shawahid al-Tawdih wa-l-Tashih li-Mushkilat al-Jami al-Sahih and offering critical annotations on its Cairo edition .
Background and Composition
Ibn Malik authored Shawahid al-Tawdih to parse and explain grammatically difficult narrations found in Sahih al-Bukhari . The text was first published in India in 1319 AH (1901 CE)—with another report mentioning 1309 AH—under the supervision of Muhammad Muhyi al-Din al-Ja'fari . Because this Indian print lacked cross-references mapping the textual evidence back to the specific books and chapters of Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Mu'allimi compiled a detailed hadith documentation (takhrij), seemingly as a personal reference aid .
In 1957 CE, the Egyptian scholar Muhammad Fuad Abd al-Baqi published a new edition of Shawahid al-Tawdih in Cairo with hadith references . Al-Mu'allimi subsequently cross-checked his draft against Abd al-Baqi's publication, supplementing in red ink any narrations he had initially missed or where the new edition supplied additional citations . During this comparison, al-Mu'allimi identified typographical mistakes, clerical errors (tashif), unacknowledged editorial interventions in the base text, and traditions outside Sahih al-Bukhari that Abd al-Baqi had left unsourced, prompting him to compile a separate section of corrections and notes .
Structure and Method
The work is organized into three distinct parts:
- Extraction of Bukhari Narrations: Titled al-Tanbih 'ala al-ahadith allati dhakaraha Ibn Malik fi Shawahid al-Tawdih wa-bayan mawadi'iha min Sahih al-Bukhari (Drawing Attention to the Hadiths Mentioned by Ibn Malik in Shawahid al-Tawdih and Clarifying Their Locations in Sahih al-Bukhari). This part is arranged into three tabular columns: the Indian printed edition (recording page and line numbers), the hadith text, and the corresponding citation in Sahih al-Bukhari (recording the book and chapter) . Al-Mu'allimi appended marginal remarks on the left side of the manuscript pages whenever analytical commentary was required .
- Non-Bukhari Narrations: A supplementary section identifying traditions in Shawahid al-Tawdih that do not stem from Sahih al-Bukhari, tracing them to other primary sources such as Sunan al-Bayhaqi, Musnad Ahmad, and philological lexicons, while remarking on textual variations .
- Critical Notes on the Cairo Edition: Titled Tatimmat wa-mulahazat li-ta'liqat al-ustadh al-fadil Muhammad Abd al-Baqi 'ala Shawahid al-Tawdih li-Ibn Malik (Completions and Observations on the Annotations of the Respected Muhammad Abd al-Baqi on Ibn Malik's Shawahid al-Tawdih). It is formatted into four columns: page, line, the printed reading, and al-Mu'allimi's critical observation .
Manuscript and Publication
The autograph manuscript of the treatise is preserved in the Library of the Grand Mosque in Mecca (Maktabat al-Haram al-Makki al-Sharif) . It was published as the fourth treatise in Volume 23 of the collected works edition Athar al-Shaykh Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Mu'allimi al-Yamani .
