Takhrij Ahadith Ihya Ulum al-Din (Documentation of the Hadiths of Ihya Ulum al-Din) is a specialized compilation of hadith documentation (takhrij) for the traditions cited in Abu Hamid al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din, centering on the expanded evaluations provided by Murtada al-Zabidi (1145–1205 AH / 1732–1790 CE) alongside earlier works by al-Hafiz al-Iraqi (725–806 AH / 1325–1404 CE) and Taj al-Din al-Subki (727–771 AH / 1327–1370 CE) .

Background and Sources

The core documentation of the hadiths in al-Ghazali's Ihya originated with al-Hafiz al-Iraqi, who began a comprehensive multi-volume takhrij around 751 AH, supplemented it up to 760 AH, and subsequently produced an abridgment entitled al-Mughni 'an Haml al-Asfar fi al-Asfar fi Takhrij ma fi al-Ihya min al-Akhbar, in addition to an intermediate version known as al-Kashf al-Mubin . Earlier, Taj al-Din al-Subki compiled a list of hadiths from the Ihya for which he found no chain of transmission, appending it to his biographical entry for al-Ghazali in Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyya al-Kubra .

When Murtada al-Zabidi composed his expansive commentary on the Ihya, titled Ithaf al-Sada al-Muttaqin bi-Sharh Ihya Ulum al-Din, he incorporated the entirety of al-Iraqi's al-Mughni, cited available parts of al-Iraqi's large takhrij, and added extensive supplementary documentation following the methods of the hadith masters (huffaz) . Al-Zabidi traced transmission paths, referenced an extensive range of primary collections, and evaluated the authenticity of narrations not addressed or located by earlier scholars .

Extraction and Structure

In modern publication, the hadith documentation embedded within al-Zabidi's commentary was extracted (istikhraj) as an independent work by Abu Abd Allah Mahmud ibn Muhammad al-Haddad . The objective was to isolate the critical hadith rulings and provide scholars and researchers with direct access to the source criticism of the narrations without requiring consultation of the extensive commentary text itself .

The extracted work incorporates al-Zabidi's and al-Iraqi's documentation from Ithaf al-Sada al-Muttaqin alongside the corresponding entries noted by Ibn al-Subki, omitting duplicate citations . The material is organized according to the original sequence of chapters in the Ihya, supplemented by numbered entries and alphabetical indices of hadith texts to facilitate retrieval .

Publication

The extracted compilation was published as a multi-volume edition titled Takhrij Ahadith Ihya Ulum al-Din by Dar al-Asimah in Riyadh (1408 AH / 1987–1988 CE) .
