Takhrij Ahadith al-Kashshaf (full title: Takhrij al-Ahadith wa-al-Athar al-Waqi'ah fi Tafsir al-Kashshaf li-l-Zamakhshari) is a specialized hadith extraction (takhrij) work by al-Jamal al-Zayla'i (d. 762 AH / 1360 CE) that documents, verifies, and critically assesses the prophetic traditions and non-prophetic reports cited in al-Zamakhshari's Quran commentary, al-Kashshaf. The book is also recorded under the alternate title al-Is'af fi Takhrij al-Ahadith wa-al-Athar al-Waridah fi Tafsir al-Kashshaf.
Background and Method
The work arose from collaborative research between al-Zayla'i and al-Hafiz al-'Iraqi. According to al-'Iraqi, the two scholars studied hadith literature together to extract narrations for specific major texts: al-'Iraqi worked on Abu Hamid al-Ghazali's Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din and the narrations referenced by al-Tirmidhi, while al-Zayla'i focused on al-Hidayah and al-Kashshaf, with each scholar assisting the other.
In Takhrij Ahadith al-Kashshaf, al-Zayla'i systematically tracks down the narrations cited without full chains in al-Kashshaf, tracing their lines of transmission across primary hadith collections, musnads, and early Quran commentaries. He heavily utilized al-Tha'labi's commentary al-Kashf wa-al-Bayan as a primary reference when tracing traditions that al-Zamakhshari had incorporated. Al-Zayla'i critically evaluates each report, distinguishing sound transmissions from weak ones and explicitly identifying fabricated narrations as well as those lacking any verifiable basis (la asla lah).
Abridgment and Editions
The text was later abridged by Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani in his work al-Kafi al-Shaf fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Kashshaf. Ibn Hajar preserved the core conclusions of al-Zayla'i's work while supplementing it with additional narrations—particularly non-prophetic companion reports (mawqufat)—that al-Zayla'i had omitted.
A manuscript of al-Zayla'i's work is preserved in Cairo at Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyyah under collection number 132 Hadith. The text has been published in four volumes edited by 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'd (Dar Ibn Khuzaymah, Riyadh, 1414 AH / 1994 CE) and Sultan ibn Fahd al-Tubayshi, and was subsequently reissued by Dar Ibn Hazm in Beirut (1426 AH / 2005 CE).
