Tahrir Taqrib al-Tahdhib (تحرير تقريب التهذيب, The Critical Revision of the Approximation of the Refinement) is a four-volume biographical evaluation and critical commentary authored jointly by Bashshar Awwad Maruf and Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut, published in 1417 AH / 1997 CE by Mu'assasat al-Risalah in Beirut . The work presents an established text of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's (d. 852 AH / 1449 CE) biographical dictionary Taqrib al-Tahdhib, alongside a systematic reassessment of his judgments regarding narrator reliability (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) across the canonical Six Books .
Background and Purpose
Ibn Hajar originally composed Taqrib al-Tahdhib as an epitome of his own larger work, Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, which was itself an abridgment of Yusuf ibn al-Zaki al-Mizzi's (654–742 AH) biographical encyclopedia Tahdhib al-Kamal fi Asma' al-Rijal . In Taqrib al-Tahdhib, Ibn Hajar distilled the status of each narrator into concise, one-line entries denoting their identity, generational rank (tabaqah), death date, and overall reliability status .
Over time, Taqrib al-Tahdhib became standard among scholars and students of hadith transmission, who often treated Ibn Hajar's verdicts as definitive determinations without returning to early source materials or critically re-examining the underlying evidence . Following their extensive work editing Tahdhib al-Kamal, Bashshar Awwad Maruf and Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut argued that Ibn Hajar's evaluations in the Taqrib were individual interpretive judgments (ijtihadiyyah) that occasionally conflicted with early critical authorities, contained internal inconsistencies across his different writings, or relied on ambiguous phrasing—such as describing contested narrators as saduq yahim ("truthful but errs") without resolving their overall status . Tahrir Taqrib al-Tahdhib was undertaken to re-evaluate these narrator ratings directly against earlier critical literature .
Methodology and Structure
The authors divided their methodology into two main components :
- Textual Verification: The core text of Taqrib al-Tahdhib was collated against Ibn Hajar's autograph manuscript as well as a twelfth-century AH manuscript penned by Muhammad Amin ibn Hasan al-Mirghani al-Makki, in addition to being compared against their critical edition of Tahdhib al-Kamal . The authors corrected typographical errors, vocalized disputed names, nisbas, and patronymics, rectified transmission sigla (al-ruqum), and supplied footnotes pointing out slip-ups in death dates and generational assignments .
- Critical Reassessment (Tahrir ahkam al-Taqrib): The authors investigated the biographical grade assigned to each transmitter . When they agreed with Ibn Hajar's verdict, they left the entry without comment . When they disagreed, they inserted their revised verdict directly into the text following a solid black dot (•), backing their conclusion with concise rationale drawn from early biographical dictionaries . For disputed transmitters, they weighed conflicting criticisms, examined available narrations, and distinguished between acceptable narrators (hasan al-hadith) and those suffering from mild weakness (da'if yu'tabaru bihi) usable only for corroboration .
