Tahrir al-Nashr (Arabic: تحرير النشر), titled by its author as Ithaf al-Barara bima sakata 'anhu Nashr al-'Ashara (إتحاف البررة بما سكت عنه نشر العشرة), is a specialized work in the discipline of Quranic reading verification (tahrirat) by the Ottoman Hanafi scholar Mustafa al-Izmiri (d. 1155 AH / 1742–1743 CE) . The book analyzes and supplements the authoritative compendium al-Nashr fi al-Qira'at al-'Ashr by Ibn al-Jazari (d. 833 AH / 1429 CE), investigating the transmissions, variant readings, and source attributions left unmentioned or unclarified in the original text .
Purpose and Composition
Al-Izmiri authored the work to address ambiguities and omissions in Ibn al-Jazari's al-Nashr . In his introduction, he noted that although Ibn al-Jazari listed numerous source works in al-Nashr, he frequently attributed specific variant readings (wujuh) to only some of those sources while remaining silent about others, leaving readers uncertain about what was contained in the unmentioned books .
Furthermore, the source texts did not all document identical transmissions for each of the ten canonical readers; some agreed with Ibn al-Jazari while others diverged, omitting certain paths or recording variant transmissions he had excluded . Al-Izmiri also pointed out instances where al-Nashr attributed readings to specific books contrary to their actual contents, attributing such discrepancies to potential oversights by Ibn al-Jazari or to scribal errors . Consequently, al-Izmiri undertook a critical re-examination of these transmissions against the available source texts to provide a comprehensive reference for scholars of qira'at .
Scope and Method
In Tahrir al-Nashr, al-Izmiri systematically examines twenty primary source works among those transmitted by Ibn al-Jazari, including al-Wajiz by al-Ahwazi, al-Ghaya by Ibn Mihran, and al-Mubhij by Sibt al-Khayyat . For each canonical reader, the author clarifies:
- Whether Ibn al-Jazari possessed chains of transmission (asānīd) from a given source work .
- Whether Ibn al-Jazari omitted certain chains found in that source work from al-Nashr .
- Which specific reading variants Ibn al-Jazari passed over in silence, accurately restoring their attribution to their respective original source texts .
Manuscripts and Publication
Al-Izmiri revised the work multiple times, resulting in noticeable variations across early manuscript copies before he finalized his last autograph draft, which is preserved in the library of al-Azhar in Cairo . An incomplete version of the text was earlier published as an appendix to Muhammad Ibrahim Salim's Faridat al-Dahr from a single deficient manuscript, before the full text was later edited and printed based on the author's final autograph . Along with the treatises of Muhammad al-Mutawalli, al-Izmiri's editorial verifications remain primary references in late post-Jazarian tahrirat scholarship .
