Tahqiq al-Mash ala al-Jawrabayn wa al-Nalayn (Verification of Wiping over Socks and Sandals) is a legal and hadith treatise by the Damascene scholar Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi (1283–1332 AH / 1866–1914 CE) examining the jurisprudential validity and proofs for wiping over socks and footwear during ablution .
Subject and Content
Al-Qasimi establishes the topic by affirming that all legal rulings return to the Quran as the foundational source of legislation, locating the primary basis for wiping over foot coverings in the broader textual indications of the verse of ablution . The treatise compiles evidence from the Quran, the prophetic Sunnah, statements of the Companions and Successors, the opinions of the legal schools (madhhabs), and the assessments of scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Hazm .
The author classifies and defends the relevant prophetic traditions, separating them into general reports—such as the hadith of Thawban regarding wiping over turbans and foot warmers (tasakhin)—and specific reports, such as the narrations of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari explicitly mentioning wiping over socks and sandals . He addresses criticisms raised against these chains of transmission, answering objections of broken transmission (inqita') and defending their standing as sound (sahih) or good (hasan) proofs . Al-Qasimi argues that the textual evidence and linguistic definitions of socks contain no stipulations requiring them to be soled with leather (muna''al) or thick (thakhin), concluding that the concession applies generally to thin and thick socks alike .
Publication and Reception
The treatise was first published in Damascus in 1332 AH (1914 CE) by Matba'at al-Taraqqi . The hadith scholar Ahmad Muhammad Shakir praised the work, noting that he read it in his youth and gained extensive knowledge from its adherence to prophetic evidence; at the request of Muhammad Nasif, Shakir later contributed an introduction and additional proofs for a subsequent printing after copies had become scarce .
The work was later edited by Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani and published by al-Maktab al-Islami in Beirut, accompanied by al-Albani's complementary treatise Itmam al-Nush fi Ahkam al-Mash . Contemporary reference works characterize it as one of the most comprehensive treatises written on the legal ruling of wiping over socks .
