Tahdhib Sunan Abi Dawud (Refinement of Sunan Abi Dawud) is a hadith and legal commentary by the scholar Ibn al-Qayyim (691–751 AH / 1292–1350 CE) on Mukhtasar Sunan Abi Dawud by al-Mundhiri (d. 656 AH) .

Title and Composition

The author referred to the work by its full title, Tahdhib Sunan Abi Dawud wa-Idah 'Ilalihi wa-Mushkilatih (Refinement of Sunan Abi Dawud and Clarification of Its Defects and Difficulties), in his Zad al-Ma'ad, a title also recorded by his contemporary al-Safadi . His student Ibn Rajab and later al-'Ulaymi recorded it with slight variation as Tahdhib Sunan Abi Dawud wa-Idah Mushkilatih wa-l-Kalam 'ala ma Fihi min al-Ahadith al-Ma'lula, while in other writings such as Bada'i' al-Fawa'id and Miftah Dar al-Sa'ada, Ibn al-Qayyim cited it under the shortened title Tahdhib Sunan Abi Dawud .

Ibn al-Qayyim composed the work during his period of residence in Mecca, working systematically through al-Mundhiri's abridgment of the collection compiled by Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (d. 275 AH) from beginning to end .

Content and Methodology

In his introduction, Ibn al-Qayyim praised al-Mundhiri's abridgment and stated that he set out to refine it further by addressing hadith defects ('ilal) that al-Mundhiri had passed over or left incomplete, authenticating narrations that al-Mundhiri had not authenticated, resolving difficult texts (mutun mushkila), and supplying sound (saliha) narrations relevant to chapters that had been omitted . He also stated his intent to expound at length on intricate legal and critical issues while disavowing blind sectarian partisanship .

Rather than providing a uniform word-by-word explanation, the work functions largely as a detailed gloss (hashiya) and critical study resembling classical literature on hadith defects . Ibn al-Qayyim frequently leaves multiple narrations without commentary before engaging in exhaustive legal, theological, and isnad analyses on specific traditions .

Transmission and Printed Editions

The complete text as originally drafted alongside al-Mundhiri's work did not survive intact; rather, it was preserved through an extraction (tajrid) compiled by Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Su'udi, who separated Ibn al-Qayyim's supplementary commentary from al-Mundhiri's base text .

The work was first partially printed in India in 1305 AH on the margin of Shams al-Haqq al-'Azimabadi's Ghayat al-Maqsud, reaching the end of the chapter on performing ablution after consuming camel meat . A complete edition was published in Cairo in eight volumes by Matba'at Ansar al-Sunna al-Muhammadiyya, edited by Muhammad Hamid al-Fiqi with the initial collaboration of Ahmad Muhammad Shakir (who contributed through volume three) . In that edition, Ibn al-Qayyim's text was printed at the bottom of the page beneath al-Mundhiri's Mukhtasar and al-Khattabi's Ma'alim al-Sunan .
