Tahdhib al-Athar: Musnad Ibn Abbas is a major portion of the expansive hadith work Tahdhib al-Athar wa Tafsil Ma‘ani al-Thabit ‘an Rasul Allah min al-Akhbar ("Refinement of Reports and Detailed Exposition of the Meanings of Sound Prophetic Traditions") by the historian, exegete, and jurist Ibn Jarir al-Tabari (224–310 AH / 839–923 CE) . The work is dedicated to recording, authenticating, and exhaustively analyzing the traditions narrated by the Companion Abd Allah ibn Abbas .
Background and Scope
Al-Tabari intended Tahdhib al-Athar as an encyclopedic compilation encompassing every sound narration attributed to the Prophet ﷺ, organized by narrator as a musnad . His broader design aimed to provide scholars with a comprehensive treatment of the Sunnah parallel to his exhaustive treatment of the Quran in his commentary .
According to his student Abu Muhammad al-Farghani, al-Tabari arranged the work beginning with the musnad of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, completed the musnads of the Ten Promised Paradise, the Prophet’s family (Ahl al-Bayt), and the freedmen (al-Mawali), and had completed a substantial section of the musnad of Ibn Abbas before death prevented him from finishing the entire project in 310 AH . Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi noted that had al-Tabari brought the entire work to completion, it would have reached one hundred volumes .
Methodology and Structure
For each hadith established as authentic through his chains of transmission, al-Tabari pursued a rigorous multi-layered methodology :
- Transmission and Criticism: He compiled the diverse chains of narration (turuq), addressed subtle defects (‘ilal), and evaluated the transmitters .
- Jurisprudential Derivation: He extracted legal rulings (ahkam), legal precedents (sunan), and differences of opinion among early scholars (ikhtilaf al-‘ulama’), evaluating the evidentiary strength of each side's arguments .
- Linguistic Exposition: He examined difficult vocabulary (gharib al-hadith), syntax, and nuanced semantic meanings .
- Polemical Defense: He systematically answered textual and theological objections and refuted critics who questioned prophetic reports .
In Musnad Ibn Abbas, this method is applied across numerous legal and theological themes, including water purity and ritual washing, the dawn qunut prayer, travel concessions regarding fasting and prayer shortening, and sighting the crescent moon .
Reception
Scholars praised Tahdhib al-Athar for its analytical breadth. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi commented: "I have not seen anything like it in its genre" . Yaqut al-Hamawi remarked that it was a book impossible for later scholars to match or bring to completion . Al-Farghani observed that no scholar after al-Tabari was able to comment on and elucidate traditions in the comprehensive manner achieved in this book .

The surviving portion of Musnad Ibn Abbas has been published in modern critical editions:
