Tafsir Surat al-Fatiha (Exegesis of Surat al-Fatiha) is a concise Quranic commentary by the Yemeni scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Muallimi al-Yamani (1313–1386 AH / 1896–1966 CE), published as part of his collected works (Athar al-Mu'allimi) .
Context and Publication
The treatise remained unpublished in manuscript form until its inclusion within Majmu' Rasa'il al-Tafsir (Compendium of Exegetical Treatises), forming part of the eighth volume of Athar al-Shaykh al-'Allama Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Mu'allimi al-Yamani . The collection was edited by a team of researchers directed by Ali ibn Muhammad al-Imran and published by Dar 'Alam al-Fawa'id in Mecca (1434 AH) . The treatises in the exegetical compendium were written at varying intervals across al-Mu'allimi's life, including during his judicial service under the Idrisi rule in Asir, his years in India, and his tenure at the Library of the Grand Mosque in Mecca .
Contents and Structure
The work spans 58 pages in the collected edition and provides a verse-by-verse commentary on the entirety of Surat al-Fatiha . Al-Mu'allimi examines each verse through three primary dimensions: linguistic meaning (ma'na), variant Quranic recitations (qira'a), and grammatical analysis (i'rab) .
A central section of the treatise is dedicated to defining the theological concept of worship (al-'ibada), in which al-Mu'allimi frequently cross-references his monograph on the subject, Kitab al-'Ibadah, which forms the first volume of the collected works . The text contains cross-references to internal passages that are absent from the surviving manuscript, as well as citations to a work or section titled al-Fara'id intended for extensive elaboration on select issues, leaving it unresolved whether al-Fara'id was a separate treatise or a lost portion of the commentary .
