Tafsir Juz Amma (Tafsīr Juzʿ ʿAmma) is a contemporary Quranic commentary on the thirtieth and final section (juzʾ) of the Quran by the Saudi scholar Musaid al-Tayyar, published in 1420 AH (1999–2000 CE) . The work focuses on explaining the core meanings of the verses and vocabulary while examining the transmitted interpretations of early authorities (al-salaf) .

Purpose and Scope

Al-Tayyar chose to comment on the final juzʾ of the Quran due to its frequent recitation by Muslims during daily prayers and other occasions . His stated aim was to restrict the primary text strictly to the essence of exegesis (sulb al-tafsir)—defined as direct clarification (al-bayan) of the intended meaning—while leaving aside extensive digressions into grammatical analysis (iʿrāb), rhetoric (balāghah), jurisprudence (fiqh), and derived secondary benefits (istinbāṭāt) that frequently lengthen other commentaries .

Structure and Method

The book is structured into an introductory methodological section followed by the sequential commentary on the surahs, organized in a dual format of main text (matn) and footnotes (ḥāshiyah) :

  • Introductory Principles: Before beginning the exegesis, the author outlines four foundational principles: the definition and boundaries of tafsir, the categories and causes of disagreement among early commentators, the generational tiers of the salaf in exegesis, and the method of the salaf in interpreting vocabulary .
  • The Main Text (Matn): Formulates the direct meaning of the verses in concise, accessible prose, integrating explanations of unfamiliar lexical items directly into the running interpretation .
  • The Footnotes (Ḥāshiyah): Focuses on detailing variations in early transmitted opinions, explaining their possible contextual justifications (tawjīh), determining the reasons behind differing views, and applying weighting principles (tarjīḥ) to select the soundest reading .

Sources

For early transmitted opinions, al-Tayyar relied primarily on the exegesis of Ibn Jarir al-Tabari (d. 310 AH), drawing heavily on Tabari's evaluative rules, lexical evidence, and critical assessments . In addition, he referenced a select group of later works when necessary, including Daqāʾiq al-Tafsīr (compiling the exegetical statements of Ibn Taymiyyah), Ibn al-Qayyim's al-Tibyān fī Aqsām al-Qurʾān, Ibn Kathir's Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm, and Muhammad al-Tahir ibn Ashur's al-Taḥrīr wa-l-Tanwīr .

Publication and Abridgments

The complete work was published by Dar Ibn al-Jawzi . In 1423 AH (2002–2003 CE), an abridged edition isolating solely the primary running text was published under the title Matn al-Tafsīr (Tafsīr Juzʿ ʿAmma) .
