Tafsir Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (Arabic: تفسير ابن رجب الحنبلي), also published under the title Rawa'i' al-Tafsir: al-Jami' li-Tafsir al-Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (روائع التفسير: الجامع لتفسير الإمام ابن رجب الحنبلي), is a modern thematic compilation of the Quranic exegesis of the Hanbali scholar and hadith master Zayn al-Din 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (736–795 AH / 1335–1393 CE) .
Background and Compilation
Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali did not compose a single comprehensive commentary spanning the entire Quran from beginning to end. However, he authored dedicated monographs on specific surahs and verses—such as his commentary on Surat al-Fatiha (Tafsir al-Fatiha, also identified with I'rab Umm al-Quran) , Surat al-Ikhlas, and individual verses such as إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ —alongside extensive exegetical commentary dispersed throughout his major works and treatises, including Jami' al-'Ulum wa-l-Hikam and Lata'if al-Ma'arif .
The contemporary scholar Tariq ibn 'Iwadullah ibn Muhammad (Abu Mu'adh) collected, extracted, and ordered these scattered exegetical discussions from Ibn Rajab's various writings into a unified commentary arranged sequentially according to the traditional order of the Quran's surahs and verses .
Methodology and Content
The work synthesizes Ibn Rajab's distinctive scholarly approach, which integrates hadith criticism, transmitted exegesis (tafsir bi-l-ma'thur), theological exposition in accordance with the Sunni traditionalist tradition, legal insights, and spiritual exhortation (raqa'iq) . The compiler documented the texts, cross-referenced the verses, authenticated and checked the narrations, and corrected placements of verses that had been misattributed or misplaced in drafts .
Publication
The collection was published by Dar al-'Asimah in Saudi Arabia in a first edition in 1422 AH / 2001 CE, comprising two volumes totaling 1,570 pages .
