Tafsir Ibn Furak (Arabic: تفسير ابن فورك), also known as Tafsir al-Qur'an, is a Quranic commentary composed by the Ash'ari theologian, Shafi'i jurist, and grammarian Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Furak (d. 406 AH / 1015 CE) .
Composition and Method
According to the exegete Abu Ishaq al-Tha'labi, Ibn Furak initially dictated his exegesis at an expansive length, covering up to the fiftieth verse of Surat al-Baqarah across forty-three fascicles (ajza'). Subsequently, he restarted the commentary from beginning to end, adopting a concise didactic structure centered on questions and answers (al-as'ilah wa-al-ajwibah) until he completed the entire text .
Ibn Furak's total authored output in theology (usul al-din), legal theory (usul al-fiqh), and Quranic meanings (ma'ani al-Qur'an) reached nearly one hundred treatises .
Manuscripts and Modern Publication
Portions of the work survived in manuscript form, notably the third volume preserved in the Feyzullah Library in Istanbul (MS 50) .
Several surviving sections of Tafsir Ibn Furak were edited as academic master's theses and published by Umm al-Qura University in 1430 AH / 2009 CE, including:
