Tafsir Gharib al-Quran (Interpretation of the Unfamiliar Vocabulary of the Quran) is a contemporary reference work on Quranic lexical obscurities by the Qatari scholar Kamila al-Kuwari.

Background and Composition

The author completed the work on 18 Safar 1429 AH (25 February 2008 CE) in Doha, Qatar. In the preface, al-Kuwari states that she had memorized the Quran in her youth with the support of her father, who assisted her in revising it. Motivated by the importance of helping readers comprehend difficult or ambiguous Quranic vocabulary (gharib al-Quran), she compiled this manual to provide accessible explanations of terms requiring clarification.

Structure and Methodology

The work is organized sequentially following the canonical order of the Quranic chapters (surahs), beginning with Surat al-Fatihah and Surat al-Baqarah. In presenting the material, al-Kuwari:

  • Identifies and isolates key words and phrases within each surah that necessitate linguistic and interpretive clarification.
  • Transcribes definitions and lexical commentary compiled from classical and contemporary treatises on Quranic exegesis (tafsir) and gharib studies.
  • Adheres in matters of theological belief (aqidah) to the methodology of the pious predecessors (al-salaf).
