Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim - al-Muqaddam

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim (Exegesis of the Noble Quran) is a series of transcribed Quranic exegesis lessons delivered by the Egyptian scholar Muhammad Ismail al-Muqaddim, centered on explaining the text of the Quran through a concise and structured commentary .

Purpose and Approach

Al-Muqaddim inaugurated the exegesis series at the beginning of the month of Ramadan to address shortcomings in Quranic study and engagement, aiming to integrate systematic memorization of the Quranic text with a simplified, concise understanding of its meanings . To ensure that students could absorb the exegesis alongside their memorization schedule without being overwhelmed by expansive commentaries, he organized the pace of the lessons to cover approximately one-fourth of a hizb (a quarter-fraction of a Quranic section) per week .

Source Text and Selected Commentary

For the foundation of the lessons, al-Muqaddim chose the classical work Tafsir al-Jalalayn (by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti), relying specifically on the critical supercommentary (hashiya) entitled Qurrat al-'Aynayn by Judge Muhammad Kan'an . Al-Muqaddim observed that Tafsir al-Jalalayn is among the most widely distributed and celebrated exegeses, characterized by extreme brevity and carefully weighed phrasing . However, because its condensed expressions require guided instruction to fully unlock, he encouraged attendees to follow the text, memorize its core glosses, and record additional commentary and explanatory points in their book margins .

Content and Evaluation of the Base Text

In his introductory lectures, al-Muqaddim detailed the key analytical strengths embodied in Tafsir al-Jalalayn:

  • Clarification of uncommon vocabulary (gharib al-Quran) .
  • Outlining the occasions and contexts of revelation (asbab al-nuzul) .
  • Mentioning well-known variant recitations (qira'at) and points of Arabic grammatical parsing (i'rab) .
  • Identifying abrogating and abrogated rulings (al-nasikh wa-l-mansukh) and legal deductions (ahkam al-Quran) .
  • Citing prophetic narrations directly attributed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (al-ahadith al-marfu'ah) that explain specific verses .

Alongside these benefits, al-Muqaddim highlighted three primary reservations found within Tafsir al-Jalalayn: the figurative interpretation (ta'wil) of certain divine attributes, the inclusion of weak or fabricated hadiths, and the presence of unsubstantiated biblical tales and historical narratives (Isra'iliyyat) recorded without clarification . He noted that Muhammad Kan'an's gloss, Qurrat al-'Aynayn, served precisely to rectify these shortcomings, providing the corrective apparatus needed during the teaching sessions .
