Tafsir al-Quran al-Azim - Juz Amma (تفسير القرآن العظيم - جزء عم, "Interpretation of the Great Quran – Juz Amma") is a contemporary commentary on the thirtieth section of the Quran (Juz Amma) authored by Abd al-Malik ibn Muhammad al-Qasim .

Purpose and Approach

In his introduction, the author states that the science of Quranic exegesis (tafsir) is among the noblest of disciplines because it pertains to the speech of God . He emphasizes that studying exegesis captures the core purpose of Quranic recitation, which is contemplation ( كِتَابٌ أَنْزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ / "[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses"), and secures benefits in both this world and the Hereafter .

To illustrate the methodology of learning, he quotes a report recorded in the Musnad of Ahmad ibn Hanbal from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, in which the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ narrated that they would learn ten verses at a time from the Prophet ﷺ and would not move on to the next ten until they had mastered both the knowledge and the practical application contained within them .

Structure and Content

Although focused on Juz Amma, the author opens the work with a detailed commentary on Surat al-Fatihah prior to commencing Surat al-Naba, explaining in a footnote that he placed al-Fatihah at the beginning due to its elevated status and the community's pressing need to understand and reflect upon its meanings .

In his treatment of Surat al-Fatihah, the work outlines its various titles—including Umm al-Kitab (Mother of the Book), al-Sab al-Mathani (The Seven Oft-Repeated Verses), Surat al-Hamd, Surat al-Salah, al-Waqiyah, and Adam al-Quran—and notes its status as a mandatory pillar of prayer and a healing recitation (ruqyah) . The text also explains foundational creedal points, such as affirming the Divine attributes without distortion or denial, the derivation and theological significance of the basmalah and the Divine names Allah, al-Rabb, al-Rahman, and al-Rahim, the classification of guidance into hidayat tariq (guidance of showing the way) and hidayat tawfiq (guidance of inner granting), and the inclusion within the chapter of all three categories of tawhid: lordship (rububiyyah), worship (uluhiyyah), and names and attributes (al-asma wa-l-sifat) . The commentary then proceeds to explain the short chapters of the thirtieth juz verse by verse, beginning with Surat al-Naba .
